The rack rate is the published, undiscounted price of a room, the figure a hotel quotes before any deal, package or discount. It is a starting point for negotiation, not a price most guests actually pay. Seeing it on a quote tells you what the resort lists, not what you will be charged.
A useful companion read is how to spot an overpriced quote.
Why does rack rate matter for us?
Some offers show a high rack rate crossed out and a lower “special” price beside it, to make the deal look larger. The saving may be real, or the rack rate may be a number that nobody pays. What matters for a couple is the final total for two for your dates, including tax and service charge.
How does rack rate show up in a quote?
A quote might show “Rack rate, strikethrough; your rate, lower; save a large amount”. Do not judge the deal by the size of the saving. Ask what the same room costs on the resort website for the same dates, and what the final payable figure is after taxes and fees.
What should we ask about rack rate?
Put these questions to the resort or agent, and ask for the answers in writing:
- What is the final payable total for two for our exact dates?
- Does the price include tax, service charge and any resort fee?
- What does the same room cost if we book direct on the resort website?
- Is the discount tied to a condition, such as non-refundable payment?
