The Perhentian Islands suit couples who want turquoise water, simple beaches and a break from the city. Getting there takes planning, and the choice between the two main islands matters more than most couples expect. This page walks you through both.
Our Perhentian Kecil or Besar guide is the best next read if you are choosing an island.
Who are the Perhentian Islands best suited for?
They are best suited to couples who want snorkelling, quiet beaches and early nights, and who are content with simple surroundings. A few days here can feel like a proper reset after the wedding. There is little to organise once you arrive, because the resort and the sea fill the day.
Better options exist when you want polished service, large rooms or a private pool. In that case, look at Langkawi, where more stay types are available. If you want a quieter and less social island, read our guide to a quiet island honeymoon without crowds.
Which island should we choose, Kecil or Besar?
Kecil is the smaller island, with a wider range of budgets and a livelier shoreline. Besar is larger and more resort-based, and tends to be calmer. Both have good snorkelling, but the evenings feel different.
| Island | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Perhentian Kecil | Variety, social evenings, lower-cost rooms | More noise, more guests, simpler rooms |
| Perhentian Besar | Quiet, resort comfort, couples | Fewer cheap options, quieter nightlife |
If you are also comparing Redang, our guide to Redang or Perhentian sets out the choice.
How do we get to the Perhentian Islands?
You travel to the northeast coast first, then take a speedboat. The main departure point is the jetty at Kuala Besut. You can fly to Kota Bharu and transfer by road, or drive from the peninsula. Check current flights when you search, because routes change.
The boat ride is short compared with the road leg, but it depends on the sea. Ask the resort which jetty and time it uses, who handles your luggage and what happens if the boat is delayed. Our guide to a speedboat or ferry to the island shows the questions to ask.
When is the best time to go?
The Perhentian Islands are on the east coast, so they follow the northeast monsoon pattern. During the monsoon, most resorts close or reduce service and boats may not run. Outside it, the sea is calmer and snorkelling is better, but conditions can still change by the day.
Our best months for Redang and Perhentian guide explains how to read the calendar. Always ask for operating dates in writing. If your leave falls in the closed season, we can compare overseas or west coast options.
Where should we stay for privacy?
Look at the beach, the jetty and your neighbours as well as the room. A room with sea views can still sit next to a busy dock. Our guide to jetty and dock noise on island stays lists what to ask.
Check whether the room has air-conditioning at night, whether hot water is available and how far you walk to the restaurant. If one of you is less confident in the water, see island honeymoon when one cannot swim.
What makes up the total for two?
The room rate is only part of the total. A Perhentian trip for two is made of these parts:
- Travel to the Terengganu coast for both of you.
- Speedboat transfers, in both directions.
- Room nights, with taxes.
- Meals or a meal plan.
- Marine park fees.
- Snorkelling trips and equipment.
Remote islands have limited food choices, so a meal plan can help. Ask exactly what is covered. Because medical help is further away on a small island, also read about insurance for remote island trips.
What about halal food and prayer?
Resort kitchens differ. Some are halal-certified, some are pork-free without certification, and some serve alcohol. These are three different things, so ask which one applies to your resort.
Ask about the surau, the qibla direction in your room and whether packed meals on boat trips follow the same standard. Plan prayer times around early boat departures.
What are the entry rules for Malaysian couples?
The Perhentian Islands are domestic, so no visa or passport is needed. Bring your identity cards and booking confirmation. Marine park rules apply to visitors, so check the current conservation fee and rules with your resort before you travel.
How should we pace a short and a longer stay?
For three nights, treat the first and last days as travel days. Use the middle day for one snorkelling trip and a long beach afternoon.
For five nights, add a second boat trip and one quiet evening walk. Leave a spare day in case the sea changes your plan. Rest is the point of the trip, so protect it.
How can we plan this together?
- List your leave days and a likely month.
- Decide whether quiet or variety matters more.
- Write down halal and prayer must-haves.
- Send these to us. We will compare Perhentian options as a total for two and confirm your requests in writing with the resort or operator.
