How to Plan Sunset Moments for Two

You want a sunset you will remember, and you do not want to rely on luck.

HoneymoonQuest Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

Plan a sunset in three steps: choose a spot that faces the right way, set the timing, and prepare a fallback. That turns a hopeful evening into a reliable one. Each step takes only a few minutes.

This guide belongs to our romantic experiences topic, where we plan special moments around what you can control.

Step one: which spot should we choose?

Start with direction. Sunset needs a view toward the west, so check which way your beach or terrace faces.

Spot typeGood forTrade-off
Resort beachEasy, close, no transferMay be shared with other guests
Terrace or balconyPrivate and relaxedLimited if the view is blocked
Jetty or pierWide open skyCan be windy and busy
Hilltop or viewpointDramatic sceneNeeds transport and more time
BoatOpen water and a moving viewWeather and cost

Pick the type that suits your energy that day. A tired couple will enjoy a terrace more than a hilltop.

Step two: when should we go?

Arrive early, because the light before the sun drops is the softest. Settle, take your photos, and then watch.

Check the exact time for your travel month in our guide on checking sunset time before booking. That prevents a rushed tour that ends after dark.

Step three: what if clouds roll in?

Clouds can turn a sunset into grey sky, but they can also colour it. Plan a calm backup so the evening does not depend on the sky.

Read our guide on backup plans for a cloudy sunset. A warm drink, a short walk and a good table are enough to save the mood.

Should we go private or shared?

A shared sunset is simple and costs less. A private one gives you quiet and control.

Our guide on sunset cruise or beach sunset compares crowding, cost and control. If you worry about crowds, read how to avoid crowded sunset spots.

What should we bring?

  • A light layer for the breeze after the sun goes down.
  • Insect repellent, as dusk is when insects stir.
  • A small towel or mat if you plan to sit on sand.
  • A charged phone and a power bank.
  • Water, and a snack if the spot is far from food.

What should we do next?

  1. Check which way your resort or beach faces.
  2. Choose a primary spot and a backup.
  3. Note the sunset time and arrive early.
  4. Send us your resort and dates, and we will check the options and confirm any arrangements in writing.

Questions couples ask

How early should we arrive for a sunset?

Arrive well before the sun touches the horizon so you can settle, find your spot and take a few photos in calm light. The sky can look best a little before and after the sun itself drops. Check the time for your dates, and allow for travel to the spot.

Does every beach face the sunset?

No. Beaches on a west-facing coast see the sun go down over the sea, while those facing east see the sunrise instead. Ask the resort which way the beach faces, and look at a map before you book.

What if we are staying at a resort that faces the wrong way?

Look for a nearby west-facing beach, a hill, a jetty or a short boat trip. Compare the extra transfer time with how much the view matters. Sometimes the resort's own terrace is enough.

Is it worth booking a guide for sunset?

Only if the spot is hard to reach or you want help with timing. For a beach near the resort, a guide is rarely needed. Ask the resort what is already included.
