Bridging Public Holidays for a Honeymoon

You want to stretch a small leave balance by using days the calendar already gives you.

HoneymoonQuest Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

Bridging means placing your leave days between public holidays and weekends so one day off joins two blocks together. A single leave day can turn a long weekend into a trip you can pack for. This guide shows the method in four steps.

It is part of our season and timing topic, where we plan the dates first and the destination second.

What does bridging mean in practice?

Take a public holiday that falls midweek. If you add the days that separate it from the nearest weekend, you get one continuous break.

Each bridging day takes one leave day, but returns the holiday and the weekend as part of the same stretch. That is why the same leave balance can feel two or three times longer.

Which calendar shapes save the most leave?

Some shapes give you more for less. The table below lists five patterns you will meet most, with the saving described in plain terms.

ShapeWhat you addWhat you gain
Holiday on a Monday or FridayNothingA free long weekend
Holiday on a TuesdayThe MondayA four-day block for one leave day
Holiday on a ThursdayThe FridayA four-day block for one leave day
Holiday on a WednesdayThursday and FridayA five-day block for two leave days
Two holidays in one weekThe gap daysA block that can run up to nine days

Your own calendar decides the exact numbers, so count them from your list of dates.

How do we bridge step by step?

  1. List the public holidays for your state and your employer’s year.
  2. Mark the weekends beside each holiday.
  3. Find the gaps between the holiday and the weekend.
  4. Fill each gap with a leave day and total the block.

Compare two or three blocks. Pick the one that covers the longest rest for the fewest leave days.

What should we check before we buy tickets?

Holidays move. Lunar and religious dates shift, and governments sometimes announce extra days at short notice. Treat any date as provisional until the official source confirms it.

Check three things: your company may have its own rules for replacement days, state holidays may differ between you and your spouse, and a leave application usually needs approval first.

How does a bridge change the trip we choose?

A four-day block suits a short flight and one base. Our guide on stretching leave with public holidays lists good matches for each length.

A block of nine days opens other options, such as two bases or a longer flight. Even then, keep a rest day before the work return.

What if the block lands in a peak week?

Holidays attract everyone, so flights and resorts can cost more. A midweek departure sometimes keeps the price calmer. You can also read our plan for a honeymoon with only five days leave.

For Chinese New Year, family visits shape the choice more than the calendar does. See our page on honeymoon around Chinese New Year.

How do we check the usable days?

After you pick a block, subtract the flights and transfers. Put your dates into the usable holiday days tool and see the days you actually keep.

If the number looks small, move the departure by a day or pick a closer place.

What should we do next?

  1. Download or note the official holiday list for your state.
  2. Mark every gap between a holiday and a weekend.
  3. Compare two blocks and choose the one that saves the most leave.
  4. Send us the dates, and we will check flights and stays as a total for two.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

Send us both work calendars and the holidays you want to use. We will build a trip around the days you share and compare options as a total for two.

Questions couples ask

What is a replacement holiday?

When a public holiday falls on a day that is already a rest day, some employers and states give another day off in its place. Rules differ by state, sector and company, so read your contract or ask HR before you plan around a replacement day, and confirm it before buying tickets.

Do all states share the same public holidays?

No. A national list applies everywhere, but each state adds its own, such as a sultan's birthday or a state day. Check the official list for the state where you work, because your colleague in another state may not share your date.

Can we bridge if we work different schedules?

Yes, but you must compare calendars. Work out which of your days off match, then fill the gaps with leave days. If one of you works weekends or in shifts, count only the days you both really have free before choosing dates.
