Ask the resort for a sample dinner menu for every night of your stay, with the halal dishes marked. If you would be happy to eat those dishes repeatedly, keep half board. If not, switch to room and breakfast, and choose dinners one at a time.
This sits in our booking requests topic. If you are still checking whether a kitchen is suitable at all, read our guide on halal meal plan checks before you pay first.
What does half board include?
The half board plan usually means breakfast and dinner at the resort. The details of dinner differ widely, so do not assume.
Some resorts serve a set menu, some a buffet and some a choice of two or three mains. Each style gives a halal diner a different set of risks, so ask which applies.
Why can halal choice feel thin?
On remote islands, the resort may import fresh halal meat and have a short menu. In cities, the hotel may rely on one certified outlet.
That does not make the resort unsuitable. It only means you should ask about variety before you commit, not on the third night.
How do we test the menu?
A simple test is to ask for a sample menu across all your nights. Then use this table.
| What the menu shows | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Different halal mains each night | Keep half board |
| Two or three halal mains that rotate | Acceptable for a short stay; ask about swaps |
| Same halal dish every night | Ask for a swap or drop the plan |
| Halal only “on request” with notice | Ask for a firm order the day before |
Which questions should we send?
Send these in one message, and ask for a reply in writing.
- Is the halal main dish on the menu certified, and by whom?
- Do halal dishes change each night, or repeat?
- Can we pre-order the day before, and is there a cut-off?
- Can half board be swapped for à la carte at the same restaurant?
- If the halal main is unavailable, what is the replacement?
Our guide on halal set dinners on honeymoon packages covers how to read a set menu.
When should we skip half board?
Skip it if the answers stay vague or if the island has only one dining room with a short menu. You then keep the freedom to go elsewhere or order simply.
Read meal plans on remote islands for the numbers you need to compare, including the value of dinner outside the plan.
How do we keep the answers on record?
Save the resort’s reply on your phone, and ask them to attach your halal request to the booking. Staff change shifts, and a note on the booking is easier to find.
If a halal-certified kitchen is part of your reason for booking, ask for the certificate copy at the same time.
What should we do next?
- Count how many dinners you will eat at the resort.
- Ask for a sample menu across those nights.
- Mark the halal dishes and check for repeats.
- Decide whether to keep, swap or drop half board.
- Send us the reply and we will compare it with an à la carte plan for two.
