The nightly rate is only one line of what you will pay. The total for two adds transfers, meals, taxes, fees and extras, and it can reverse which place looks cheaper. Compare totals, not nightly rates.
This is a core idea in our budget topic, and the sheet below turns it into something you can fill in tonight.
Why does the nightly rate mislead?
It leaves out whatever is sold separately. A low rate with breakfast not included, a boat transfer extra and a resort fee on top may cost more than a higher rate that includes them.
Different places also include different things. One rate may cover breakfast and transfers, another nothing. Comparing the two numbers directly is like comparing a meal with a main course.
What goes into the total for two?
Build it from the same rows each time. Missing rows are where surprises come from.

Fill the cells with figures from written quotes, not from memory. Where a cell is unknown, write “ask” and chase it before you decide.
How do taxes and fees change the picture?
Some places show a price before service charge and tax, and some add a fee at check-in. Ask whether the figure on screen is the final figure. Our guide to resort fees and taxes shows where to look.
Rule: if a line is not in writing, treat it as unknown. A quote that says “plus plus” has told you the total is higher.
Why do transfers and meals decide the winner?
For an island or a remote resort, transfers can be one of the larger lines, and there may be no cheaper place to eat nearby. For a city hotel, transfers are small but meals and taxis add up each day.
Read our notes on airport transfer options and real costs and all-inclusive versus half-board value to price those two rows with care.
Does trip length change the cost per night?
Yes. Fixed costs such as flights and transfers are spread over fewer nights on a short trip, so each night costs more. A longer stay lowers the cost per night even if the total is larger.
Our guide on why short honeymoons cost more per day explains this. If you have limited leave, it helps you decide whether one more night is worth it.
What should we do next?
- Pick the two options you are choosing between.
- Ask each for a written quote showing room, taxes, fees and what is included.
- Fill in the table, then divide each total by the number of nights.
- Enter the figures into the honeymoon budget calculator, or send both to us and we will confirm the details with each hotel.
