A cruise is worth it when the all-in total for two, including the flight or drive to the port, matches what you would pay for a resort that suits you. It is not worth it if the low fare hides drinks, excursions and extras that you would not choose. The worksheet below builds the real number.
This guide sits in our destination decisions topic. For the full ship option, see cruise honeymoon from Malaysia.
Why does the fare mislead?
A cruise fare usually covers the cabin and basic meals. It leaves out items that most couples still buy.
Treat the headline fare as the first line of the bill, not the bill itself. The rest of the lines are where the surprises live.
What lines make up the all-in price?
Ask for each line in writing. This table shows what to look for.
| Line | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Fare for two | Is the price per person or per cabin? |
| Taxes and port fees | Are they included in the quote? |
| Service charges | Are they added daily or at the end? |
| Flights or travel to port | Which airport, which day, which baggage? |
| Hotel before or after | Do you need a night near the port? |
| Drinks | Packages, individual drinks, bottled water |
| Specialty dining | Which restaurants cost extra? |
| Excursions | Ship tours versus independent outings |
| Wi-Fi and photos | Are these paid? |
| Insurance and visas | What do you need for each port? |
How do drinks and extras change the total?
Drinks, specialty dining and tours are the lines that grow. For a couple who do not drink alcohol, a drinks package may add little value, which our guide on drinks packages and whether couples get value explains.
Our cruise extras that quietly inflate your bill page covers other items to price in advance.
How do we compare it to a resort?
Build the same worksheet for a resort stay: room, meals, transfers, activities and taxes. Then compare the two totals for two, and give the time spent travelling a value.
A resort needs less movement. A cruise gives you a handful of places. Neither is cheaper by default.
What other costs do couples miss?
Couples forget insurance, the night before departure and bag fees on the flight to the port. Our hidden honeymoon costs couples miss guide has a longer list.
Use the honeymoon budget calculator to add the lines in one place.
When is a cruise clearly a good fit?
A cruise fits when you want a few stops without repacking, you like a lively ship, you have a departure port near you and your all-in total fits your budget. If those four hold, the format earns its place.
If length is your question, see short cruise or long cruise.
