June in Japan is the start of the rainy season, called tsuyu. It brings cloud, drizzle and humidity, but not a whole month of rain. A plan with indoor highlights, flexible outdoor time and a possible switch to Hokkaido keeps the honeymoon enjoyable.
For the destination, see the Japan honeymoon page. This guide sits in the season timing topic.
What is tsuyu?
Tsuyu is the rainy season that crosses much of Japan in early summer. It brings long, grey, damp spells with some brighter days between. The timing varies by region and by year.
Hokkaido is largely outside this pattern, which is why it appears in June plans.
What does it feel like for a couple?
Expect humid air, light rain and cloud. Photos may look softer and greener, and some temples and gardens look beautiful in the wet. Walking tours are less comfortable, and distant views may be hidden.
If you are tired after the wedding, a slower, indoor-rich plan can actually suit you.
How do Tokyo, Kyoto and Hokkaido compare in June?
| Plan | What suits couples | Rain note |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo and Kyoto | Museums, food halls, department stores, onsen towns | Pack for wet days, keep schedules loose |
| Hokkaido | Cooler air, green landscapes, farm stops | Outside the main pattern, check forecast |
| Tokyo only | Short leave, easy indoor choices | Fewer moves, easier to adapt |

How do we plan indoor days?
Pick two or three indoor anchors per city, such as a museum, a food hall or a tea experience. Add a private onsen or spa evening if it suits you, and see private onsen checks.
Put the outdoor highlight on the morning that looks clearest the night before, not on a fixed day.
What about food and prayer in the rain?
Rain can make walking between restaurants harder, so choose halal or pork-free places close to your hotel. Check certification for each meal. Our Japan halal food planning guide lists the questions to ask.
Carry some snacks for days when plans change.
What should we pack?
- A compact umbrella and a light waterproof jacket.
- Quick-drying shoes and a spare pair of socks.
- A small bag for wet items.
- Light, breathable clothes for humid hours.
- A power bank, since you will rely on your phone for maps.
What should we do next?
- Write down your June dates and the number of nights.
- Choose between a rain-ready Tokyo and Kyoto plan, or Hokkaido.
- List your must-haves: halal meals, onsen, a quiet room.
- Send them to us, and we will build both options and compare them, as a total for two.
