Shifting a stay by two nights can change the rate, the crowds and the flight options. It does not always lower the price, so test it with two quotes. Compare the total for two, not the nightly figure.
This guide belongs to our season timing topic, where we look at which weeks and days give you the best value.
Why do midweek and weekend rates differ?
Resorts price demand. When most guests are on a short weekend break, rooms fill and rates rise. When rooms are quiet, the resort lowers the rate to fill them.
The pattern depends on who the resort serves. A leisure island sees weekend demand from city guests. A hotel in a business district may see the opposite.
How do we run the two-night shift test?
Ask for the same room on two sets of dates. Keep the nights and the room the same.
- Date set one: your first-choice dates.
- Date set two: the same number of nights, shifted by two nights.
- Compare the total for two, including transfers and taxes.
Do this for two or three resorts. The pattern becomes clear quickly.
What changes besides the room rate?
Flights and ferries move too. A weekday departure may have more seats or a different timetable. Ferry schedules can be reduced on certain days, so check them.
Activities also vary. A boat trip, a spa slot or a table at the best restaurant may be easier to get midweek. Our guide on how much you save going midweek looks at the budget side.
Does midweek save leave days?
Count the days you must apply for, not the nights. Starting on a Friday uses fewer leave days than starting on a Monday, but the rate may be higher.
If a public holiday falls beside your dates, use it. Our guide on stretching your honeymoon with public holidays shows how, and our usable holiday days calculator does the sum.
Who is a midweek stay best suited for?
It is best suited for couples with flexible work patterns or a leave block that already covers weekdays. It also suits couples who value quiet over a busy atmosphere.
A weekend start may serve you better if your leave is tight and a Friday departure saves a day. The off-peak savings and trade-offs guide helps you weigh the choice.
What should we ask the resort?
Ask in writing:
- Is the rate different between Sunday to Thursday and Friday to Saturday?
- Is a weekend minimum stay in force on my dates?
- Are transfers and ferries available on the arrival day?
- Is a large group or event booked on my nights?
- Does the honeymoon perk apply on both sets of dates?
What should we do next?
- Choose your first-choice dates and a shifted set.
- Ask for a total for two on both from the same resort.
- Check leave days, not only nights.
- Send us the quotes, and we will help you compare them. If you also want to test other months, read about shoulder-season value in Asia.
