A base needs at least two full nights before the move is worth it. Three nights is where it starts to feel like a stay and not a stop. With less than that, you spend more time packing and travelling than relaxing.
This guide sits in our itinerary styles topic, where we compare trip shapes for couples with limited leave.
Why does every move cost so much?
A move is more than the journey. You check out, wait for transport, travel, check in, and unpack. Even a short transfer can take most of a half day once you count the waiting.
You also arrive tired. The first evening in a new base is rarely your best one, so count it as a half night, not a full one.
What is the simple rule for nights per base?
Count only the full days you wake up in a place. Arrival and departure days are partial, so they do not count as full days.
- One night: a stopover only, near a flight.
- Two nights: one full day to enjoy. The minimum for a base you want to remember.
- Three nights: a relaxed rhythm with one slow day and one active day.
- Four nights or more: a real settled stay, good for resorts you chose for the room.
How do the nights add up on a short trip?
Here is how a week looks with one move, as a quick test. The point is the real days you keep, not the room count.
| Plan | Nights | Move days | Feels like |
|---|---|---|---|
| One base | Full stay | None | Restful, simple |
| Two bases, even split | Equal in each | One | Varied, some travel |
| Two bases, short and long | Short in one, long in the other | One | Variety plus a proper rest |
| Three bases | Few in each | Two | Busy, more packing |
If your leave is very short, our usable holiday days tool helps you see how many days you really have after flights.
Should we do two bases or stay in one?
If your total is only a few nights, one base usually gives you more of what a honeymoon is for. Our guide on whether a multi-base honeymoon is worth it goes through the trade-offs.
If you only have a very short break, read whether two nights is enough before you add a second place.
What makes a short base work better?
Choose bases with a simple link between them, one flight, one ferry or one drive, not a chain of connections. Ask for the full door-to-door time for each leg.
Plan the move day lightly. Our guide on planning a transfer day shows how to keep it calm and still romantic.
What if one of us is still tired from the wedding?
Start with the quieter base and give it the extra night. Tiredness slows everything, including the move itself, so a gentle first stop pays back later in the trip.
Tell us how you both feel. We can suggest an order for the bases that fits your energy, and confirm early check-in or late check-out with the hotel in writing.
What should we do next?
- Count your total nights and subtract one half day per move.
- Give each base at least two full nights, ideally three for the main one.
- Write down how you will travel between bases and the time it takes.
- Send us the plan, and we will check it and give you the total for two, with the trade-offs.
