Choose by the type of day, not for the whole trip. Use a private driver on days with long distances, heavy bags or frequent stops. Use public transport or short taxi rides on easy, central days.
This guide is part of our budget topics. It compares cost, time and stress for two people, so you spend where it saves your energy.
How do the two options compare for one day?
The table is a rough guide for a couple. Prices are not listed because they differ by place, so ask for quotes.
| Factor | Private driver | Public transport |
|---|---|---|
| Spend per day | Higher, but shared by two | Lower, but each ride adds up |
| Time lost | Little, door to door | Waiting, walking, transfers |
| Stress | Low once agreed | Higher with bags, heat or rain |
| Flexibility | Stop where you like | Fixed routes and timetables |
| Best suited for | Long routes, frequent stops | Short central hops |
Which kind of day suits which?
Sort your days into four types, then match each to a vehicle.
- Arrival and departure days carry bags, so a car or private transfer is calmer.
- Sightseeing days with spread-out places suit a driver for a set number of hours.
- Easy town days with walkable streets suit walking and short rides.
- Rest days need no vehicle at all.
An island trip may remove the question altogether. Read island honeymoon without a car if you are heading to a small island.
What is the hours-saved test?
Ask how many hours the driver gives back, then decide if those hours are worth the extra spend. Take the quoted day price, subtract what you would pay for the same trips by other means, and divide the gap by the hours saved.
If the answer feels small for an afternoon you spend together by the sea instead of waiting at a bus stop, hire the driver. If you would only save twenty minutes, take the bus.
When does a driver pay for itself?
A driver tends to pay for itself when a few of these are true.
- The places you want to see are far apart.
- You have fixed times, such as a sunset or a booked activity.
- The weather is very hot or rainy.
- You cannot read the local signs or language.
- You need prayer or rest stops that public routes do not offer.

Can we mix both?
Yes, and it is usually the best value. Book a driver for the two hardest days and use public transport or short rides for the rest.
On the days without a car, pick one area and stay within it. Our guide on scooter, Grab or driver helps you compare the in-between options.
What should we ask a driver before agreeing?
Ask these questions and write the answers in your chat.
- How many hours are included, and what is the charge after that?
- Are fuel, tolls, parking and the driver’s meals included?
- Can we stop for prayer or a rest?
- How many bags fit with two passengers?
- What happens if it rains or we change a stop?
For a place where drivers are common, see driver hire costs for two in Bali as an example of what to compare.
What should we do next?
- List your days and mark each as arrival, sightseeing, easy or rest.
- Choose the two hardest days for a driver.
- Ask for a written quote for those days, for two people.
- Send us the list and we will check the totals and trade-offs before you confirm.
