Resort photos are real, but they are chosen. Trust them for the style of the property, and check the view, the distance and the room size with other sources. Ten minutes of cross-checking is enough for most decisions.
This guide belongs to our trust and enquiries topic, about checking before you commit.
What can a photo hide?
A photo shows one angle at one moment. The table lists what can sit outside the frame, and a free way to find it.
| What may be hidden | How to check |
|---|---|
| True room size, from a wide-angle lens | Compare with the stated size on the official page |
| The view from the next building or a road | Satellite view on a map |
| The walk to the beach or restaurant | Map distance, then recent guest photos |
| Construction or worn areas | Guest photos sorted by newest |
| Crowds at the pool or beach | Photos from peak days |
Wide-angle images are common in hotel photography, so a room looking large is not a lie, just a lens.
How do we cross-check with a map?
Open the resort in a map app. Switch to satellite view and find the room block or villa you are booking.
Look at what surrounds it. Is there a road, a staff area, a neighbouring building, or an open path? For privacy, see our guide on pool villa photos versus real privacy.
How do we use guest photos?
Guest pictures are the best counterweight to marketing. Use them in this order:
- Sort by newest, so you see current condition.
- Find the room type you are booking, not a different category.
- Look at the view from the bed and the balcony.
- Compare the same angle with the official photo.
One poor photo can be bad luck. The same complaint in three recent photos is a pattern.
How do we check a photo is recent?
Look for the date on the listing, and for features that change: new buildings, renovation, repainted rooms. If the official photos show a different design from guest photos taken last month, ask the resort when the photos were taken.
A resort that replies with a date and a plain answer is a good sign.
What do we ask the resort?
Ask in writing, and for the exact room you plan to book:
- When were the room photos taken?
- What is the view from this room type?
- What is the room size in square metres?
- Is there any building work nearby on our dates?
Replies you can keep are worth more than a perfect picture. Our guide on questions to ask about villa privacy adds more.
What should we do next?
- Choose one resort and one room type.
- Open the map in satellite view and note what surrounds the room.
- Collect three recent guest photos of that room type.
- Send the written questions above, and compare the answers with the pictures.
- Read how to read a comparison page if you are unsure how much to trust a source.
