What are the three route shapes?
Each shape trades time, effort and variety. Choose the one that suits your leave.

Shape A is the easiest. Shape B gives you the most variety but needs the most time. Shape C is the gentlest.
Why does the order matter?
River lodges ask you to wake early, share a boat and eat at set times. A beach asks nothing of you. If you do the beach first, you spend your last days at a lodge with a flight to catch.
River first, beach last also protects you if a flight is delayed. You are already at the airport side of the trip when things go wrong.
How long are the transfers?
Between the river and the next stop, you may face a flight, a road leg and a boat leg. Each one has a wait attached. Ask each lodge for the exact meeting point and the time, and ask your next stay how it handles late arrivals.

What is the lodge like?
Lodges tend to be simple. Expect shared boat cruises, fan or air-conditioned rooms and fixed meal times.
If you need halal food, ask what is certified. If privacy matters, ask about a private cruise and room position.
Do not expect a resort pool. If you want that, the beach part of your trip should provide it.
When should we go?
Sabah has wetter and drier months, and heavy rain can affect river levels and boat trips. Read Sabah dry season timing before locking dates.
