Should Parents Contribute to the Honeymoon?

Your family wants to help, and you are unsure how to accept without it becoming awkward later.

HoneymoonQuest Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

You can accept help from your parents and still keep the honeymoon yours. The key is to agree on the terms early, kindly and in words both sides remember. A grateful reply and a clear scope protect the trip and the relationship.

This question sits in our budget topic, where we look at money decisions couples face around the wedding.

Is it fine to say yes?

Yes. In Malaysian families, helping with the wedding or the honeymoon is a way of showing love. Accepting graciously can mean as much to them as the money itself.

Check first that you both feel comfortable. If either of you feels uneasy, talk it through before you reply.

Should we ask, or wait for them to offer?

It is usually kinder to wait. Asking can put parents in a corner if money is tight for them too. If they raise it, thank them and ask what they have in mind.

If you are short after the wedding, our guide on a honeymoon budget when the wedding drained savings helps you plan first, so you ask only for what you need.

What should we agree before any money moves?

Settle these points in one short conversation, and send a warm message afterwards so everyone remembers.

  1. Is it a gift or a loan? If a loan, when and how will it be repaid?
  2. What does it cover: flights, the stay, or a set amount for the trip?
  3. Who decides the destination, dates and style? The two of you.
  4. Will you share the plan, photos or receipts? Choose what you are comfortable with.
  5. Does the money come before booking, or as a refund afterwards?

How do we handle a parent who wants to choose the place?

Some parents have a favourite destination, or want you close to home. Listen, thank them and ask what they hope you will feel there. You may find a way to meet that wish in a different place.

Our guide on parents wanting local when you want overseas has gentle ways to open that conversation.

What can we say to accept or decline?

You do not need perfect words. A few lines in your own style will do.

  • To accept: “Thank you so much. We would be grateful for help with the flights. We will choose the place together and send you photos.”
  • To decline kindly: “That means a lot to us. We have set aside our own budget, and we would love to share the trip with you through photos.”
  • To accept part: “We would be happy to take a small amount towards one night, and we will cover the rest.”

How does this fit with angpao and our own budget?

Angpao from the wedding may already be earmarked. Our guide on using angpao money for your honeymoon shows how to place it in the plan.

What should we do next?

  1. Talk together first about what you are comfortable accepting.
  2. Reply to your parents with thanks, and agree the terms in a warm message.
  3. Write down the final amount you have to work with.
  4. Send us that amount and your dates, and we will show what a trip for two can include.

Questions couples ask

Is it rude to turn down money from parents?

Not if you do it warmly. Thank them first, say what you are already planning, and offer another way to include them, such as a small gift for the trip or sharing photos. Most parents mainly want to feel part of the happiness.

Should we ask parents to pay for the whole trip?

It is usually kinder to ask for nothing and let them offer. If they do, a partial contribution towards one item, such as flights or one night, keeps expectations clear and leaves the rest of the trip in your hands.

How do we stop money becoming a say in the plan?

Agree on the terms before you accept. Say whether it is a gift or a loan, what it covers, and that the two of you decide the destination and dates. A short, warm message sent in writing helps everyone remember.
