Use the name printed on the passport you will actually travel with, even if it is not your married name. Your IC and marriage certificate are supporting papers, not the booking name. Match each booking to that one document.
This guide sits in our booking requests topic. If you want the basic rule first, read passport names must match your booking.
Why do names differ after a wedding?
Some partners change a surname after marriage, and some keep their own. Each document updates at a different time, so for a while they may not agree.
That is normal and not a sign that anything is wrong. The point is to pick one document to book with and carry proof for the rest.
Which scenario matches us?
Find your row, and use the name in the last column.
| Your situation | Name to use for flights and hotel |
|---|---|
| Passport still shows the old name | The old name, exactly as printed |
| New passport already issued | The new name, exactly as printed |
| New passport applied, not yet received | Only book once you hold it, or use the old passport and keep the date in mind |
What if the new passport arrives after we book?
This is the awkward case. If you booked under the old name and the passport changes before you travel, the ticket and passport no longer match.
Ask the airline early about the correction rule and any fee, and read name change fee: airline versus hotel. Better still, delay booking until you know which passport you will carry.
What should we carry as proof?
Pack a small bundle in your hand luggage. It helps at check-in, the hotel desk and immigration if a question comes up.
- Your marriage certificate, with a copy
- Both IC copies
- Your passports
- The booking confirmations showing the names
Our guide on honeymoon proof when surnames or nationalities differ explains how to show it calmly.
What about visas and entry forms?
Entry forms and visa applications use the passport name too. If you apply for a visa, copy the name from the passport you will carry.
If time is short, read no time for a visa? honeymoon options. Check the destination’s official page for current rules before you apply.
What about hotels and resort bookings?
Hotels are less strict than airlines, but they may ask for ID at check-in. Booking in the passport name keeps it simple.
Tell the hotel you are on honeymoon and that your names may differ from each other. Ask them to note it on the booking.
What should we do next?
- Take out your passports and note the exact name on each.
- Decide which scenario you are in.
- Book flights only once you know which passport you will carry.
- Pack the proof bundle in your hand luggage.
- Send us the dates and the scenario, and we will check each booking.
