Shared Jetty and Dock Noise on Island Stays

You want a quiet island morning, and the boat engines may start before you do.

HoneymoonQuest Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

A jetty is the island’s front door, so it is rarely silent. The noise comes from engines, loading carts, voices and sometimes an early supply run. You can avoid most of it by choosing a room that faces away from the dock and by asking when the boats run.

This guide belongs to our privacy and rooms topic, where we check the same things for every resort.

Why is a jetty noisier than it looks on the map?

Sound carries over water much more easily than over land. A jetty that looks far away on a resort map can still be clear to a room on the same bay.

The jetty is also a working place. Luggage is loaded, supplies arrive, and staff call to each other. None of this is rude or wrong, but it can wake a couple who came to sleep in.

What counts as dock noise?

Think of four sources, not one.

  • Engines idling or revving at the pier
  • Loading of luggage, ice, gas cylinders and food
  • Guests waiting for the boat in groups
  • Day-trip and dive boats leaving from the same point

Each has its own hours, so ask about all four.

How do we read the resort map?

Start with the jetty and draw a rough circle around it. Rooms inside that circle and facing the water are the most exposed.

Then look for the kitchen service path and the staff area. A quiet-looking room beside the delivery route can be just as loud as one beside the dock.

What should we ask the reservation team?

Keep the questions specific, so the answer is specific too. Vague questions get vague replies like “our rooms are peaceful”.

  1. What time is the first boat arrival or departure each day?
  2. Do supply or staff boats use the same jetty as guests?
  3. How far is the room I am being offered from the jetty, in a walk or a buggy ride?
  4. Does the room face the jetty, the open sea or the garden?
  5. Can you confirm the room number or category in writing?

Our quiet room request guide shows how to word this politely so the team can act on it.

Do overwater and beachfront rooms change the answer?

Yes. Overwater rooms sit on a walkway close to the water, where boat sound arrives from every side. Read our overwater villa privacy and noise reality before you pay extra for one.

A beachfront room on a quiet cove can be calmer than an overwater room near the dock. Check the cove, not only the room type.

Does the departure morning matter too?

It does. You may be one of the guests whose boat leaves at a fixed time, and your own transfer adds to the early-morning sound.

Ask where departing guests gather and whether luggage is collected from your door. For ferry-day planning, see our guide on island honeymoons with easy transfers.

What should we do next?

  1. Pick two or three resorts and write down the jetty position for each.
  2. Send the five questions above to each reservation team.
  3. Compare the answers side by side, including the walk to meals.
  4. Send us the replies, and we will help you decide which room gives you quiet without a tiring walk.

Questions couples ask

Are all island rooms near the jetty noisy?

No. Noise depends on how many boats use the jetty, at what hours, and how far your room sits from the engines and loading area. A room set back behind trees or a rise can be calm even if the jetty is on the same bay. Ask for the boat schedule, not only the room name.

Which hours are usually loudest?

Early morning and late afternoon, when supply boats, guest transfers and day-trip groups come and go. Ask the resort for the first and last boat times in writing. If your flight forces a dawn departure, you will hear it too, so ask where departing guests gather.

Can we ask for a room on the far side of the island?

You can request it, and a good reservation team will tell you honestly whether it exists. Remember a far-side room may mean a longer walk or buggy ride to the restaurant and jetty. Ask what the trade-off is, then decide together.
