A non-refundable rate is a cheaper room price where the money you pay cannot be returned if you cancel or change. The resort or platform keeps the payment, in full or in part. The lower price is the trade for giving up flexibility.
A useful companion read is reading a cancellation policy.
Why does non-refundable rate matter for us?
A honeymoon follows a wedding with plenty of moving parts, and dates can shift because of leave, family or the wedding itself. A non-refundable rate suits couples whose dates are firm. If anything is uncertain, a flexible rate may be worth the extra, so compare the saving to what you would lose.
How does non-refundable rate show up in a quote?
A booking page may show “Non-refundable, pay now, save more” next to a “Free cancellation, pay later” option. Check the conditions on each, including whether you can change the dates or the guest name. Some non-refundable rates allow a date change with a fee, and others allow none.
What should we ask about non-refundable rate?
Put these questions to the resort or agent, and ask for the answers in writing:
- If we cancel, do we lose the whole payment or part of it?
- Can we change the dates or the guest name, and at what charge?
- What happens if the resort cancels or closes?
- How much more is the flexible rate for the same room and dates?
