A peak surcharge is an extra fee added to the room rate on high-demand dates, such as school holidays, long weekends, Christmas and New Year, or festive periods. It is charged on top of the normal rate. It can appear as a separate line or be folded into a higher nightly price.
A useful companion read is Christmas and New Year surcharge.
Why does peak surcharge matter for us?
Honeymoon dates tend to land on weekends and holidays, so a peak surcharge can change the total more than you expect. A quote that looks cheap for a midweek date may rise sharply when your dates touch a peak period. Ask for the price for your exact dates, not a “from” price.
How does peak surcharge show up in a quote?
A quote might list “Room rate, peak season supplement, gala dinner supplement”. Each line is a separate charge. Check whether the supplement applies to every night or only to the peak nights, and whether moving your stay by one or two days would change it.
What should we ask about peak surcharge?
Put these questions to the resort or agent, and ask for the answers in writing:
- Which of our dates fall inside a peak period, and why?
- Is the surcharge per night, per room or per stay?
- Would moving the stay by a day or two remove the surcharge?
- Is any compulsory festive dinner charged on top of it?
