Bintan Honeymoon: Ferry Route From Malaysia

You want a resort break close to home, but the route is less obvious than the brochure suggests.

HoneymoonQuest Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

Most Malaysian couples reach Bintan by flying or crossing to Singapore, then taking a ferry to the resort side of the island. It works, but it makes the first day mostly about moving. If you have very little leave, plan three nights or more so the trip is not all transfer.

Our Bintan honeymoon page covers the resorts. This guide is only about the route and what it does to your day.

What is the usual route?

The usual route has four stages. You travel from home to Singapore, get through immigration, reach the ferry terminal on the east side of Singapore, then sail to Bintan.

On the Bintan side, a resort car or shuttle takes you to the property. Each stage has its own waiting time, so the total is longer than the sailing alone.

Where do the hours go on arrival day?

  1. Getting to Singapore. By air from KLIA or KLIA2, or overland if you start from Johor Bahru.
  2. Clearing immigration. Queue length changes by hour and day, so assume some waiting.
  3. Reaching the ferry terminal. A taxi or train ride across Singapore, with luggage.
  4. Check-in and boarding. Ferry operators ask you to arrive before departure. Check the time on your ticket.
  5. Sailing and arrival formalities. You enter Indonesia at the Bintan terminal.
  6. Resort transfer. A short drive to your hotel or villa.

Even with a good connection, you rarely reach the resort before the afternoon. Count the day as half used.

Is it worth it for a short break?

Best suited for couples with three or more nights who want a resort that feels abroad without a long-haul flight. Better options when you have only two nights: a Malaysian island or a hotel with a pool, where you land and relax in a few hours. Our guide on island honeymoons without long ferry rides lists those.

What should we confirm in writing?

  • The ferry date, the sailing time and who books the ticket.
  • Where your resort transfer meets you on the Bintan side.
  • What happens to the pickup if you arrive late. See late flight and pickup.
  • Your return buffer: leave a comfortable gap between your ferry and your flight home.
  • Baggage rules on both the ferry and the flights.

How do we protect the first evening?

Choose a flight or crossing that gets you to the terminal in the morning if you can. Book dinner at the resort for the first night instead of exploring. Our plan for an island ferry day arrival shows how to keep that evening gentle.

Is Batam a simpler alternative?

Batam can be easier to reach, though resort quality and atmosphere differ. See Batam or Bintan for a short couple break before you decide.

What about halal food and prayer?

Indonesia is majority Muslim, but a resort kitchen can still serve mixed menus. Ask the resort which meals are halal-certified and where a prayer space is. Do not assume, ask in writing.

What should we do next?

  1. Count your leave days and name the airport you will leave from.
  2. Check your passport validity and the official entry rules for Singapore and Indonesia.
  3. Decide whether you can spare a full day for travel.
  4. Message us. We will lay out the route, arrival times and the total for two, and confirm requests with the resort.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

Send us your departure airport, dates and leave days. We will map a Bintan route with the real arrival time and a total for two, so you can judge if it fits.

Questions couples ask

Is there a direct way from Malaysia to Bintan?

The usual route for Malaysian couples goes through Singapore, then a ferry to the resort side of Bintan. Other routes exist, for example via Batam, but schedules change. We check the current options for your dates before quoting, so you see the real door-to-door time.

Do we need a separate visa or entry check for each country?

You pass through Singapore and then enter Indonesia, so rules for both apply. They change, so check the current requirements on the official immigration sites before you travel, and make sure your passport has enough validity left.

Is Bintan realistic for a long weekend?

It can be, if you accept that the first and last day are mostly travel. Three nights lets you enjoy one full day at the resort. A shorter stay can feel like all transfer and little rest.

What if the ferry is delayed or the sea is rough?

Sailings can be changed by weather or operator schedules. Leave a buffer on the day you fly home, and ask your resort what happens to your transfer if you arrive late. We can confirm that in writing for you.
