A free package photo session is real value if you know its limits: how long it lasts, how many edited photos you receive, where it takes place and who owns the files. Ask for these five details in writing before you count it as a saving.
This guide is part of our package evaluation topic. It helps you judge a free photoshoot calmly.
What does a free photo session usually look like?
It is usually a short shoot at one or two spots in the resort, run by a staff photographer or a partner. You receive a small set of edited photos afterwards.
It suits couples who want a few good portraits without arranging a photographer. It suits less well if you have a full idea in mind, such as more than one outfit or a sunrise shoot.
What are the five limits to check?
Go through them one by one.
| Limit | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Duration | How many minutes of actual shooting? |
| Edited photos | How many are delivered, and in what size? |
| Location | One spot or more, and which ones? |
| Delivery | How and when do we receive the files? |
| Rights | May we post them, and may the photographer use them? |
Each limit changes what the session is worth.
How much time do we really get?
Ask for the minutes of shooting. A session slot may include walking to the spot, waiting for light and changing. The photographer may use only part of it.
If time is short, plan your outfit and your poses before the day. Our guide on how to plan a honeymoon photoshoot helps you make the most of a short slot.
What about the number of photos and their quality?
A free session may give a small number of edited photos and offer the rest for a fee. Ask for the number, the resolution and whether you can see a preview of the unedited set.
If you want more, ask for the price per photo or per set before the shoot. A comparison with hiring your own photographer shows whether the free session is the better deal.
Who owns the photos?
File rights vary. Some photographers give personal-use rights and keep the right to publish. Others sell a licence.
If privacy matters to you, ask for no publication in writing. Our photographer booking checklist for couples lists the terms to look for.
What if it rains or the light is poor?
Ask for the reschedule policy. A free session may be cancelled in bad weather with no replacement. Our guide on photoshoot weather reschedule policies shows what to ask.
If your leave is short, ask for a time slot early in your stay, so there is room to move it.
Is a free session better than just using our phones?
It depends on what you want. A phone gives unlimited, informal photos. A professional gives a few polished ones and a nicer lens and light.
Our guide on pro photographer or just a phone helps you decide.
For some couples, the best answer is both: the free session for a few portraits and phones for the rest.

- Ask the five limit questions and request a written reply.
- Decide whether you need more photos than the free set.
- Send us the reply, and we will help you compare it with other options.
