Flight Times for a Weekend Honeymoon

You have Friday to Sunday, and the wrong flight time could take half of it.

HoneymoonQuest Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

For a Friday-to-Sunday trip, pair a morning or early-afternoon flight out with an evening flight back. That combination gives you the most of both days. If leave is the problem, the table below shows what each choice costs.

Flight timing is a small detail with a big effect on itinerary styles for short trips. Our guide on matching flight times to resort check-in goes further on the hotel side.

How does the outbound time change Friday?

OutboundWhat you getWhat you lose
Early morningMost of Friday, a relaxed lunchAn early alarm and a sleepy start
MiddayA slow morning at homePart of Friday afternoon
EveningNo leave neededThe first evening, plus a late check-in
Late nightCheaper fares, perhapsThe whole of Friday and a tired Saturday

If you cannot take Friday off, an evening flight is still fine. Just pick a hotel that is close to the airport.

How does the return time change Sunday?

ReturnWhat you getWhat you lose
MorningA calm Sunday at homeYour last morning at the hotel
AfternoonA late check-out and a lunchA little buffer for Monday
EveningThe whole of SundayTime to unpack and rest
Late nightMaximum holiday timeA rough start on Monday

An evening return works only if you have the next morning free or very light.

What pairings work best?

Choose by your Monday, not only by your Friday.

  1. If Monday is easy, take an early outbound and an evening return.
  2. If Monday is heavy, take an early outbound and an afternoon return.
  3. If Friday is a work day, take an evening outbound and a Sunday afternoon return.

Whichever you choose, add the transfer time at each end before you decide.

What about check-in and check-out?

Most hotels have fixed check-in and check-out times, and a morning arrival will usually wait. Ask the hotel what it can do for you.

Our guide on early check-in for a honeymoon explains how to ask without expecting a promise.

Is a red-eye flight worth it?

Some couples take a late-night or red-eye flight to save a day. It can protect leave, but you land tired. Read red-eye flights: saving or regret before you decide.

What should we do next?

  1. Decide how much leave you can take on Friday and Monday.
  2. Pick an outbound and a return from the tables.
  3. Ask the hotel about bag storage and a flexible check-in.
  4. Send us your airport and dates. We will compare flights and show the total for two.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

Send us your Friday and Sunday and the airport you will leave from. We will compare flight times and show how each one changes your free hours, with a total for two.

Questions couples ask

Is a Friday morning flight better than Friday evening?

Morning gives you most of Friday, but only if you can take the day off. An evening flight keeps work intact but loses the first evening. Choose by leave. A late flight can still work if the hotel is close to the airport.

What is the best return time on Sunday?

An evening return gives you the most of Sunday. It also leaves less buffer before Monday. If you have to work on Monday, a mid-afternoon flight may feel calmer, with time to unpack.

Can we ask for early check-in or late check-out?

You can ask, but treat it as a request until the hotel confirms in writing. Availability depends on the night before and after. Ask when you book, and again a few days before you travel.
