Getting From KL to Redang Without Losing Days

Your leave is short and you want to be on the island, not stuck on the road.

HoneymoonQuest Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

The fastest way is to leave KL early, reach the Terengganu jetty before the last ferry, and arrive the same day. If you miss that cut-off, you arrive the next morning and lose half a day of a short break. Everything below is built around that one deadline.

This guide belongs to our destination fit topic and supports the Redang honeymoon page.

What decides whether we arrive today?

The jetty cut-off. Ferries and speedboats leave at fixed times, not on demand, and the last one leaves while it is still daylight. If you reach the jetty after it, you sleep on the mainland.

So work backwards. Ask the resort for the last boat on your date, add the road time to the jetty, add a buffer, and that gives your latest departure from KL. Departure times can change by season, so confirm them close to your trip.

Which route fits which couple?

RouteWorks best whenWatch out for
Early flight to Kuala Terengganu, then road to the jettyYou are tired and want the shortest effortFlight timing, bags, a road leg of its own
Overnight or early bus to the jetty areaYou want the smallest outlay and can sleep on a busA rough night before a rest holiday
Self-drive from KLYou carry lots of luggage and want freedomLong drive, parking, fatigue after the wedding

If you just married, the flight is kinder. If your flight lands late, a private car can wait for you, which is worth asking about in private airport transfer worth it.

How does the arrival day plan work?

  1. Night before: pack, charge your phone and confirm your boat time with the resort.
  2. Morning: leave KL early with a buffer for traffic.
  3. Midday: reach the jetty, check in your bags, and eat something light.
  4. Afternoon: cross to the island, check in, and take it slow.

Do not plan an activity on arrival day. Our island ferry day arrival plan shows how to use the first evening for rest.

What if we have to stay the night on the mainland?

It happens when a flight is late or the ferry is cancelled. A simple hotel near the jetty or in town works, and some couples choose it on purpose to avoid a rushed morning.

Ask the resort if they hold your booking if you arrive a day late. Write the answer down. Some stays charge a night even if you have not yet reached them.

Is the season a problem?

Yes. Redang is closed during the northeast monsoon, when the sea is too rough for crossings. Check best months for Redang and Perhentian before you commit to dates.

Which stay type is easiest on a short break?

A resort with its own jetty pickup removes one decision on the day. A chalet may need you to find the right boat counter on arrival. Compare them in our resort or chalet for a quiet couple guide.

What should we do next?

Write down your leave days, your starting city and your return flight time. Send them to us with your preferred month. We will check the jetty departures, suggest the route that gets you onto the island soonest, and give the total for two with transfers included.

Questions couples ask

Can we reach Redang in one day from KL?

Yes, if you leave early and the sea is calm enough for the ferry. The ferry leaves from the jetty at set times, so a late start can push you to the next morning. Ask the resort for the last departure on your date and plan to arrive well before it.

Is flying to Kuala Terengganu better than driving?

Flying saves long hours behind the wheel, which helps if you are tired after the wedding. You still need a road transfer to the jetty. Driving gives you flexibility with luggage but ties up a day, so compare the full door-to-door time.

Where do we leave the car?

Most visitors leave the car at or near the jetty while on the island. Ask your resort or ferry operator about the car park, the daily rate and whether it is secure, and get the answer in writing before you travel.

What if the ferry is cancelled?

The sea can be too rough for safe crossing, even in the open season. Keep one buffer night on the mainland if your flight home is tight, and ask the operator what happens to your booking if they cancel for weather.
