Track ten lines: flights, stay, transfers, food, activities, spending money, documents and insurance, shopping and gifts, tips and fees, and a buffer. Give the buffer its own line from the start. This page explains each line and what to watch.
It is part of our budget topic, where we always compare trips as a total for two.
What are the ten categories?
Sizes below are relative, not percentages, because every trip splits differently. For a ready-made breakdown by share, see our note on how couples divide a honeymoon budget by category.
| Category | Relative size | Paid when | Leak to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flights | Large | At booking | Baggage and seat fees added later |
| Stay | Large | Deposit then balance | Taxes and fees shown only at checkout |
| Transfers | Medium | Booking or on arrival | Late-night surcharges |
| Food | Medium | Daily | Resort prices on remote islands |
| Activities | Medium | Before or on the day | Add-ons at the counter |
| Spending money | Small | Daily | Card and exchange fees |
| Documents and insurance | Small | Before travel | Passport renewal time |
| Shopping and gifts | Small | Daily | Gifts for family |
| Tips and fees | Small | Daily | Service charges already included |
| Buffer | Held back | Only if needed | Spending it on wants |
How do we use the sheet?
Set one column for planned, one for paid, one for remaining. Fill planned amounts from written quotes only.
Update the paid column the same day you pay. When a line goes over, take from a line you care less about, not from the buffer.
How do we decide the buffer?
Start with a fixed slice of the total, such as a tenth, and raise it when the trip carries more risk. Remote islands, tight flight connections and long stays all justify a bigger slice.
Keep the buffer unassigned until it is needed. Our guide on how much buffer to keep helps you scale it to your trip.
Which categories do couples miss?
Documents and insurance are forgotten until the last week. Passport renewal, visa checks and cover for the trip all need time and money.
The other missed line is tips and fees. Our list of hidden honeymoon costs couples miss walks through resort fees, taxes and transfer extras.
How do we handle daily spending?
Give daily food, drinks and small buys one limit for two, and check it each evening. A simple limit stops small amounts adding up.
For a way to set the limit for your destination, read about daily spending money for two.
Can the sheet help us compare two trips?
Yes. Fill the same ten lines for each option and compare the totals, not the nightly rate. The trip with the lower hotel price may carry higher food and transfer lines.
Ask each supplier for a written total for two so every line is on the same basis.
How do we keep the sheet going after we arrive?
Take a photo of each receipt and drop it into one folder, then enter amounts at night. Five minutes each evening is enough.
If you fall behind, enter the big items first and fill small ones from your card statement later. A rough sheet you finish beats a perfect sheet you abandon.
What should we do next?
- Copy the ten lines into a shared note or spreadsheet.
- Fill planned amounts from written quotes only.
- Add the buffer line before you total anything.
- Try the honeymoon budget calculator, or send us your sheet and we will check the large lines for you.
