Start with a buffer, then give the largest part to where you sleep, the next to how you get there, and share the rest between food and activities. Adjust the parts after you see real quotes. The method below uses fractions instead of fixed amounts of money.
This guide sits in our decision methods topic. For the list of lines to track, see honeymoon budget categories to track.
What are the five parts?
Most honeymoon spending falls into five groups. Name them first, so you and your partner talk about the same things.
- Stay: rooms, resort fees and taxes.
- Flights and transfers: tickets, baggage, airport transfers, ferries.
- Food: meals not already included in the room rate.
- Activities: tours, spa, dinners with a setup, photography.
- Buffer: the cushion for changes, tips and surprises.
What starting shares can we use?
These are starting points, not a statistic. Pick the column that sounds like your trip.
| Part | Beach resort | City break | Long-haul |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stay | About a third | About a third | About a quarter |
| Flights and transfers | About a quarter | About a fifth | About a third |
| Food | About a sixth | A quarter | A sixth |
| Activities | A tenth | A tenth | A tenth |
| Buffer | A tenth | A tenth | A tenth |
The numbers will not add up exactly, because trips are not tidy. Treat them as a guide for where to look first.
How do we turn shares into a plan?
Take your total for two and divide it with the table. Then check the biggest line against a real quote. If the stay is far above its share, either move the dates or move money from activities.
A worked example in plain parts: if your total is twelve equal parts, give four to stay, three to flights, two to food, one to activities and one to buffer, with one held aside to adjust. That is the idea, not a price.
Which part should we protect?
Protect the part that matters most to both of you. For a tired couple, that is often the room and a calm arrival. For food lovers, it may be the dining line.

What if we start from flights?
Some couples fix the flight first because it is the least flexible. Then the other parts are shaped by what is left. Read budget a honeymoon by fixing flights first for that path.
What costs do couples miss?
Taxes, service charges, baggage fees, card fees and local transport are the common gaps. They fall between categories, so put them in the buffer. See hidden honeymoon costs couples miss.
How often should we revisit the split?
Check it at three moments: after you choose a destination, after you receive quotes, and a week before departure. Each time, move shares rather than add new money.
What should we do next?
- Write your total for two on a page.
- Set aside the buffer first.
- Fill the table using the column that fits your trip.
- Compare it with one real quote.
- Send us your total and dates, and we will break one or two options into these parts.
