A private hot spring gives you the water, the quiet and the warmth, without sharing the bath with strangers. Public baths cost less and offer a fuller experience, but they come with shared spaces and strict rules. This guide shows how to choose and what to check before booking.
It belongs to our romantic experiences topic. If Japan is your destination, our page on private onsen checks in Japan goes further.
Which type of bath suits us?
Three kinds of bath are common. The table puts them side by side so you can choose from privacy, price and ease.
| Type | Who it suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Public bath, separate by gender | Couples who do not mind being apart | You bathe separately, and house rules apply |
| Private bath, reserved for a time slot | Couples who want to soak together | Slot length, extra fee, booking ahead |
| In-room bath | Couples who want full privacy and no schedule | May be heated tap water, not a natural spring |
What does private actually mean?
Private means only you two are in the bath at that time. It does not always mean the space is fully enclosed.
Ask whether the bath is indoors, outdoors or open to a view. Ask who can see in from nearby buildings, paths or other rooms. Our guide on pool villa privacy shows how to ask these questions for any private water feature.
What are the house rules?
Each venue sets its own rules. Public baths in Japan have rules on swimwear, towels and tattoos, so read them first.
Rinse before you enter, keep long hair tied up and keep towels out of the water.
Ask whether phones and cameras are allowed, because some baths do not permit photos.
What should we check for health and comfort?
Hot water raises your heart rate and can make you dizzy. Keep your first soak short, and drink water afterwards.
If either of you is pregnant, has a heart condition, high blood pressure or a skin condition, ask a doctor first. Our page on spa allergies and sensitive skin lists useful questions about water and products.
How do we book a private bath for two?
Book as early as possible, because private slots are limited. Walk through this order:
- Choose your date and check the slot length.
- Ask if the slot has a fee and how to pay.
- Confirm whether you can bathe together as a married couple.
- Ask about swimwear, towels and bathrobes.
- Request written confirmation with the time and the room name.
What if we want modesty?
Say so when you book. Ask whether the private bath has a screen or an enclosed changing area. Our page on asking for modesty at a spa has wording you can use for baths as well.
What should we do next?
- Decide whether a natural spring or full privacy matters more.
- Check your health notes with a doctor if needed.
- Write down the three rules you are unsure about.
- Send us the destination, and we will check the options and rules for two.
