Start from what you can safely spend, then choose a trip that fits it. Do not start from a destination price and hope the numbers work out. The method below takes ten minutes and gives you one total for two.
It sits in our honeymoon budget topic, along with guides on each cost line. If you want a quick calculation, try the honeymoon budget calculator.
Where do we start, with savings or with a destination?
Start with savings. A destination price changes with dates, room type and airline. Your savings do not.
Open your joint account or your two accounts side by side. Write down only money that is already there, not money you expect.
What do we subtract before we get a trip budget?
Work down this list in order. Each line reduces the number you can spend.
| Step | What to write | Your figure |
|---|---|---|
| A | Savings available today | |
| B | Wedding bills still unpaid | |
| C | Costs before you leave: passport, insurance, clothes | |
| D | Emergency buffer you agree to keep | |
| E | Money needed for your first month back | |
| Trip ceiling | A minus B, C, D and E |
The result is your trip ceiling for two. It is a limit, not a target. Spending less is fine.
How do leave days change the ceiling?
Leave sets the length, and length sets the shape of the trip. A short break asks you to pay more per day, because flights and transfers are the same whether you stay two nights or six.
If your leave is short, you may do better with a closer place and a better room. If your leave is longer, a simpler room for more nights can feel richer. Our honeymoon cost per night versus total trip guide shows why the nightly rate misleads.
How do we split the ceiling into parts?
Divide the ceiling into six buckets before you look at any quote:
- Flights or ground travel for two.
- Room and taxes.
- Meals.
- Transfers and local transport.
- Activities and romantic extras.
- Spending money and buffer.
Roughly, flights and rooms take the biggest shares. Meals and activities flex the most. Decide together which two buckets you will protect and which you will trim first.
Which costs do couples forget?
These are the lines that arrive after you book. Ask about each one:
- Resort fees, service charge and tourism tax.
- Baggage and seat selection on the flight.
- Card fees and currency exchange.
- Tips and drivers for day trips.
- Travel insurance for both of you.
Read our guide on hidden honeymoon costs couples miss before you accept a quote.
What if the number is smaller than we hoped?
That is a common place to start, and it is not a failure. Smaller budgets work well with fewer nights, a nearer destination, or a mini-moon now and a bigger trip later. See our budget honeymoon page for ways to keep the trip special.
Ask for the wedding bills to be settled first. Then work with the number that remains.
What should we do next?
- Fill in the table together tonight, with real figures only.
- Agree your buffer and write it down.
- Note your leave days and a rough travel window.
- Send us the ceiling. We will show what a trip for two looks like within it, and tell you honestly if it is too tight for the dates you want.
