A private pool is private only if the walls, the land and the neighbouring buildings agree. Check seven points before you pay, and ask the resort to confirm the answers for the exact villa you want. It takes one evening and a short email.
This page belongs to our privacy and rooms topic. For the longer question list, see questions to ask a resort about villa privacy.
What does “private pool” actually promise?
It promises a pool that only your villa uses. It does not promise that nobody can see you in it.
Resorts use the word for a plunge pool behind a hedge and for a large pool beside a public path. Both are called private. You need to know which one you are booking.
What are the seven checks?
Go through them in order. Mark each as confirmed, unknown or a concern.
- Walls and fences. Ask the height and material on every side, not only at the entrance. A hedge looks soft but can be thin in the dry season.
- Sightlines from above. Look for upper floors, balconies, restaurants and hillside paths that look down on the pool.
- Neighbouring villas. Ask how far the nearest villa is and which way its terrace faces.
- Paths and boundaries. Find out whether guests, buggies or staff walk along the pool wall.
- The beach and the water. If the villa faces the sea, ask whether boats, jet skis or a public beach can see in.
- Staff access. Ask when housekeeping, pool cleaning and butler staff enter, and by which door.
- Night conditions. Ask about lights, pool pumps and noise from nearby venues after dark.
How do we check these from home?
Use three sources together:
- The resort’s own photos, especially wide shots and ones taken from the pool.
- A satellite map to see roofs, paths and the shape of the plot.
- Recent guest photos and reviews that name the villa type.
If a villa category has a few rows of identical villas, ask for the specific number. The best-placed villa in a category is not always the one you receive.
What should we ask in writing?
A written reply is your proof. Here is a message you can copy and adapt:
Hello, we are booking villa [number or type] for [dates] and want to be sure the pool is private. How high are the walls or fences on every side? Can anyone see into the pool from a nearby building or path? Which door do cleaners use, and at what hour? A short written reply would help us decide.
If the resort answers only in general terms, such as “very private”, ask again with the specific question. A clear resort answers clearly.
Does privacy mean something different for some couples?
Yes. For Muslim couples, a pool you can use with full modesty is the real test, so sightlines and staff access matter most. Our guide on pool villa privacy for Muslim couples covers those points.
If you plan to use the pool at dawn or at night, ask about lighting and who can see in when the sun is low.
What if the resort gives no clear answer?
Treat that as information. A shared garden-view room with a quiet pool nearby may suit you better than an uncertain villa.
You can also read the sightline test for pool villas to judge a villa from a plan. Compare the pool villa meaning with plunge pools too, because the two are priced differently.
What should we do next?
- Pick two villas you like and note their exact names.
- Run the seven checks on each, using photos and a map.
- Send the written question above to the resort, or send us the villa names.
- Book only after you hold a written answer you are comfortable with.
