A pool villa is worth it when you will use the pool for a good share of the day and the villa is truly private. If you expect to be out most days, a standard room may serve you better. Use the cost-per-hour test below to find out.
This guide belongs to our budget topic, where each upgrade is weighed against what the money could do elsewhere.
What is the cost-per-hour test?
Take the extra price of the villa over a standard room for your whole stay. Divide it by the number of hours you honestly expect to spend at the pool.
The result is the price of each hour. Ask yourselves if an hour like that feels worth it. If the answer is a quick yes, upgrade; if you hesitate, read on.
How many hours will we really use it?
Be realistic. Start from your waking hours and subtract the things you have already planned.
| Subtract this | Why |
|---|---|
| Meals out and sightseeing | You are away from the villa |
| Rainy hours | A downpour closes the pool |
| Heat at midday | Few couples swim at noon |
| The first and last day | Check-in and checkout take hours |
| Rest and naps | They happen indoors |
What remains, usually the morning and late afternoon, is your pool time. Count it for each night, then add it up.
When is the upgrade a clear yes?
There are three situations where the answer is usually yes.
- You plan a slow stay and will be in the villa most of the day.
- Privacy is your priority, for example for modesty or rest after the wedding.
- The price gap is small because you booked in a quiet season.
Our guide to checking that a private pool is truly private helps you confirm the second one.
When should we pause?
Pause if you plan a busy trip with tours every day, or if the villa has a long walk to the beach and you want to be at the sea.
Pause too if the pool is shared with neighbouring units. A shared pool versus a private pool can look similar in photos and feel very different in person.
What else could the money do?
Compare the extra price with an experience instead. A private dinner or a boat day could give you a memory that you share with each other.
Our guide on upgrading the room or spending on activities gives a way to compare the two on memory for each unit of money. Choose whichever you would talk about on the flight home.
What if we want modesty and privacy?
A private pool can help couples who prefer to swim away from other guests. It only works if walls, gates and staff access are clear. Read pool villa privacy for Muslim couples for the questions to ask.
Request written confirmation of housekeeping times and entry rules before you pay. A pool villa description alone does not tell you this.
How does the weather change the answer?
In rainy or very hot months, pool hours shrink. Ask about the season you travel in, and count fewer hours in the test.
In a dry, mild month the hours rise. A pool villa is easier to justify when the weather helps you use it.
What should we do next?
- Get the extra price for your stay, in writing.
- Count your realistic pool hours and divide.
- Check the privacy points and the pool size.
- Send us both room types, and we will compare them as a total for two.
