For a sakura honeymoon, book flights and the first hotels as soon as your leave is approved, then keep the rest flexible. Blossom weeks draw crowds, so rooms in popular cities go early. The trees also bloom on their own schedule, so a plan that can shift protects you.
This guide covers booking order. For when blossoms appear, read Japan cherry blossom timing for couples. It sits in the season timing topic, and the destination page is Japan honeymoon.
Why are blossom weeks so busy?
Visitors want the same short window, and Japan’s own travellers go too. Rooms in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka fill, and rates rise. Sightseeing spots fill early in the day.
The window is short, and it moves. That mix of high demand and uncertain dates is why booking order matters.
What should we lock in first?
Follow this order:
- Flights, once your leave dates are final.
- Hotels in the cities where rooms are scarce, with date-change terms.
- Trains and transfers that need advance booking.
- Restaurants and experiences that you cannot miss, such as a private tea session.
- Everything else, closer to the date.
How can we keep flexibility?
Ask hotels whether they allow free date changes or free cancellation, and by what deadline. Write down the answers. A slightly higher room rate with flexible terms can protect you more than a lower non-refundable one.
Plan the trip in two parts, so you can shift the cities if the blossoms appear earlier or later than expected.
What happens to prices?
Blossom weeks sit among the most expensive of the year in Japanese cities. Rates for rooms rise, and the best hotels are the first to go. We will not quote a figure without a source, so ask for the total for two on your exact dates and on a few days either side.
Our guide to whether a peak-season honeymoon is worth the price shows how to weigh the cost.
How do we pick the city order?
If the blossoms come earlier in warmer cities, start there and move on. If you are unsure, begin in a city with plenty of indoor options so a wet or cold day does not waste a travel day.
Check halal food options for each city before you finalise, and see Japan halal food planning.
What if blossoms are not out?
Have a backup: gardens, museums, shopping, onsen and good food keep the trip full. Couples find the days around the peak still lovely, with buds or falling petals.

What should we do next?
- Confirm your leave and a rough window.
- Decide whether you can shift by a few days.
- Send us your dates and departure airport.
- We will draft a booking order with a flexible option, as a total for two.
