Samui’s wet season comes later than the Andaman coast, so it can suit couples who cannot travel in the middle of the year. Treat the last months of the year with care, and plan a dry gap rather than hoping for sun. You can still enjoy the island if you set expectations.
For the island itself, see the Koh Samui honeymoon page. This guide belongs to our destination fit topic.
Why does Samui have a different rainy season?
Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand, on the other side of the peninsula from Phuket and Krabi. The two coasts get their heavy rain at different times of year.
That is why Samui can look attractive when the Andaman side is wet. It is also why a wet-season plan for Krabi does not carry over. Compare them in Phuket versus Koh Samui by rain season.
Which months need care?
Use this table as a guide for planning, then check a current forecast.
| Period | What to expect | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Early part of the year | Drier, brighter days | Easy to enjoy beaches |
| Middle of the year | Mixed, with showers | Book flexible days |
| Late in the year | Wettest stretch | Plan indoor time, expect rough sea |
| New year onward | Rain eases | Conditions improve |
Rain here comes in spells. A run of grey days can be followed by a bright run.
What does rain do to a Samui trip?
The beach is less inviting, and the sea can be rough. Boat trips to nearby islands may be cancelled.
Roads can get slick, and some outdoor dinners move indoors. Resort pools, spas and covered restaurants carry the stay.
Who is Samui in the wet months best suited for?
It suits couples who have fixed leave and a budget that favours lower room rates. It also suits those who enjoy spa days and long meals more than sea time.
If a beach proposal or a private boat day is the heart of your plan, a different month is a better option.
How do we plan a dry gap?
- Pick the days nearest the drier edge of the season and book a longer stay if you can.
- Hold one flexible day for the activity that needs good weather.
- Choose a resort with a covered restaurant, a good pool and a spa.
- Ask what happens to a beach dinner or boat trip if it rains.
Our rainy-day Plan B lists indoor ideas that still feel like a honeymoon.
How does this compare with Krabi?
Krabi’s wet months fall in the middle of the year, which is a different window. Read Krabi in rainy season to compare the two patterns.
If you can only travel in one window, pick the island whose wet season falls on the other side of your dates.
What should we do next?
- Write down your fixed leave dates.
- Check a current forecast and ask the resort what the last few weeks were like.
- Send us your dates. We will compare Samui with a drier option and confirm the rain terms in writing with the resort.
