Phuket and Koh Samui sit on opposite sides of Thailand, so they follow different rain patterns. When one coast is at its wettest, the other is kinder. If your dates fall in the rains, switching coast can save the trip without changing country.
See the destination pages for Phuket honeymoon and Koh Samui honeymoon. This guide sits in the season timing topic.
Why do the two coasts differ?
Phuket faces the Andaman Sea on the west. Koh Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand on the east. The seasonal winds that bring heavy rain and rough seas to one side do not hit the other in the same way or at the same time.
So the question is not “is Thailand wet?” but “which sea is wet on my dates?”
How do they compare?
| Point | Phuket | Koh Samui |
|---|---|---|
| Sea | Andaman Sea | Gulf of Thailand |
| Rough sea months | The southwest monsoon period | Later in the year |
| Switch idea | If the Andaman is rough, pick Samui | If the Gulf is wet, pick Phuket |
| Resort variety | Wide range of beach areas | Smaller, with quieter bays |
| Best suited for | Couples who want choice of beaches and dining | Couples who want a slower island |
Which coast for which dates?
Check the current forecast for both close to your trip. As a starting rule, the Andaman side is rougher in the middle of the year, and the Gulf side is wetter later in the year. Confirm with the Thai Meteorological Department before you commit.
If your dates are on the edge, ask us to price both. The cheaper total may not be the calmer sea.
What about sea conditions and boat trips?
Rough sea can stop boat trips and make swimming unsafe even when the sky is clear. Ask the resort what happens when flags are posted, and whether island tours move to another day or are refunded.
Our guide to swimmable beach checks lists what to ask.
How do we plan for rain on either coast?
- Choose a resort with a pool, a spa and a covered restaurant.
- Keep one half-day free for showers.
- Ask for the total for two with taxes, since rainy-season rates can still vary.
- Read our rainy-season notes for Koh Samui and Krabi.
For ideas to fill a wet afternoon, see rainy day plan B.
How do we choose between the two?
If your dates suit both, choose by style. Phuket gives more variety in beaches, dining and activities. Koh Samui feels quieter and more compact. Our Phuket or Samui first Thailand beach guide compares the feel in detail.
Check halal-friendly dining on each island before you decide, and ask the resort which meals are certified.
What should we do next?
- Write down your dates and departure airport.
- Note whether you prefer variety or a slower island.
- List your must-haves: halal meals, a pool, a quiet room.
- Send them to us, and we will compare both islands for your dates, as a total for two.
