A private beach claim is worth confirming, because it can mean three different things. Ask the resort who can reach the sand and in what hours, and ask for the reply in writing. A clear answer sets your expectations before you pay.
We look at this under privacy and rooms, where the aim is to turn a marketing word into a fact you can use.
What might “private beach” actually mean?
Listings use the phrase loosely. Three meanings are common.
- A beach the resort cleans and manages, but which anyone can walk onto.
- A stretch of sand set aside for guests, with staff or ropes at the edges.
- A beach in front of the property that the resort uses, with no access control at all.
Only the second gives you a guest-only experience. Which one you have changes what you plan, so find out before you book.
What five questions should we ask?
Put them in one message and ask for a reply to each.
- Can people who are not guests walk onto the beach in front of the resort?
- Are there marked boundaries, staff or gates?
- Is there a public path, jetty or car park close to the sand?
- Do boats, tours or local visitors stop at this beach?
- Will you confirm these answers in writing?
If the reply says “enjoy a private beach” without answering, ask again with the same numbered list.
How do we check the answer ourselves?
You can test the claim in about ten minutes. Open a satellite map and look for a road, car park or village close to the beach. Public access points usually leave a visible path.
Then read recent guest reviews and search for words like “locals”, “day trippers” and “boats”. A review that mentions them is a clue, not proof. For general method, see how we evaluate resort privacy claims.
What about photos?
Photos show the best moments. An empty beach in a photo may have been taken early or out of season. Our guide on whether you can trust resort photos explains what to look for in dates and angles.
Ask for a recent photo taken in the afternoon on a weekend. A resort that sends one is being open with you.
What if the beach turns out to be shared?
That does not end the plan. A shared beach can still be calm if you know when to use it. Our guide on a public beach next to your resort shows how to time swims, walks and dinners.
You can also look at a different cove within the resort. Read quiet cove or main resort beach to compare the options.
What should we do next?
- Send the five questions to each resort on your list.
- Check a satellite map and recent reviews for public access.
- Ask for a recent weekend photo of the beach in the afternoon.
- Send us the results, and we will confirm the beach arrangement with the property in writing before you pay.
