Take the total for two, add a small buffer, and divide by the months you have. Six, twelve or eighteen months give very different monthly amounts, so choose the length that your income can carry without strain.
This guide belongs to our occasions topic. If money is tight, our budget honeymoon page shows how couples keep a trip special on a smaller total.
How do we turn a target into a monthly amount?
Use this formula: target divided by months. The table shows what share of your target you set aside each month.
| Months to save | Monthly share of your target | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | One sixth | A trip within reach and savings already started |
| 12 | One twelfth | Most balanced, fits a yearly bonus cycle |
| 18 | One eighteenth | A bigger trip or a lean month-to-month budget |
Write your own target at the top. Then divide it by the months in your row and round up.
Which trip tier are we saving for?
Choose a tier first, then ask for a quote. This keeps the target real.
- Lean: a short break near home, shared transfers, simple meals.
- Comfortable: a mid-range resort, a private transfer, one special dinner.
- Splurge: a longer stay, a better room, two or three planned experiences.
Our honeymoon budget calculator lists the parts so you do not miss a line. For a rough sense of what couples plan, see how much honeymoon budget for two.
What milestones should the schedule have?
Match your savings to when payments fall due, not just to the calendar.
- Month one: confirm the target with a written quote.
- Early months: build the deposit, because that is the first payment due.
- Middle months: fill the flight and room balance.
- Last two months: save the spending money, tips and insurance.
Ask the supplier for the payment dates in writing and place them on your own calendar.
How do we keep going when life gets in the way?
Automate the saving. A standing transfer on payday removes the monthly decision. Keep the trip fund in a separate account so it is not used by accident.
Agree in advance on a rule for a bad month: skip one, then catch up over two. For a shorter version, read a six-month honeymoon savings plan.
Who pays what?
Decide whether you save equally or in proportion to income. Either can be fair if both of you agree and write it down. Our guide on splitting honeymoon costs as a couple shows common options.
What can lower the target without lowering the joy?
Travel midweek, choose a shoulder month, or cut one paid activity and keep the dinner. Ask for the total for two on a slightly different date. A small shift can lower the number more than cutting meals.
