Three items matter most for a honeymoon: medical cover with evacuation, trip cancellation or interruption, and protection for delays and baggage. Everything else depends on what you plan to do. Read the policy wording, not only the summary.
Insurance belongs in your budget as a line item, which is why it sits in our budget topic. This page helps you decide what to check, not which product to buy.
What should the policy cover first?
Start with the risk that costs the most if it goes wrong: a medical emergency abroad. Check that the policy covers treatment and, if you are going somewhere remote, transport to a hospital.
Then look at trip cancellation and interruption. A honeymoon is paid in advance, so a cancelled trip can mean money lost on non-refundable bookings.
Which cover items matter for which trip?
Match the table to your plan. Not every row applies to you.
| Cover item | Matters most when | Check this |
|---|---|---|
| Medical and evacuation | Overseas, islands, remote areas | Does it include transport to hospital? |
| Cancellation and interruption | Non-refundable flights or resort | Which reasons count as valid? |
| Delays and missed connections | Ferry or two-flight routes | After how many hours does it pay? |
| Baggage and documents | Long flights, many transfers | Per-item limits and proof required |
| Activity cover | Diving, trekking, motorbikes | Is the activity excluded? |
| Pre-existing conditions | Either of you has one | Must it be declared? |
Our guide on adventure activities and insurance goes deeper on the activity row.
What if one of us has comfort or mobility needs?
Say so before you buy. Pre-existing conditions are often a separate declaration, and an undeclared condition can lead to a claim being refused.
Ask also about wheelchair assistance, medical equipment and the cost of changing a room. These items are not always in a standard plan, so a short call to the insurer clears it up.
How does insurance fit the budget?
Treat the premium like a transfer or a meal: a real cost for two. Add it to your spreadsheet so it is not a surprise at the end.
If your hotel and flights are fully refundable, you may need less cancellation cover. Our note on package cancellation versus flexible rates shows how the two work together. The hidden costs couples miss list is a useful check as well.
What should we ask the insurer before paying?
Keep the questions short and written down.
- What is the limit for medical cover, per person?
- Does it include evacuation?
- Which reasons for cancellation are accepted?
- What is excluded: activities, pre-existing conditions, alcohol?
- How do we make a claim, and what proof is needed?
What should we do next?
- List your destination, dates, transfers and activities.
- Mark which rows of the table apply to you.
- Ask two or three insurers the questions above and compare the answers side by side.
- Send us your plan, and we will add the premium and any refund rules to your total for two.
