Turn-down is a nice touch for some couples and an interruption for others. If you value evenings alone, opt out or ask for it during dinner. If you like coming back to a ready room, keep it and choose the hour.
It is one of the small decisions in our privacy and rooms topic. You can settle it in two minutes with the list below.
What does turn-down service involve?
Staff enter the room in the evening, usually once. They prepare the bed, close curtains, refresh towels and may leave water or a sweet.
It takes only a few minutes, but it is still a person entering your space at a time you did not choose. That is the whole question.
Which answers point to saying yes?
Tick each line that sounds like you.
- You enjoy returning to a tidy, dim, ready room
- You will be out for dinner at a known time
- You are happy for staff to enter while you are away
- You like the small details that make a stay feel looked after
Three or more ticks suggest you will enjoy it. Ask for the time window.
Which answers point to saying no?
Now the opposite list.
- You prefer to be in the room alone from the evening on
- You feel uneasy about staff entering when you are away
- You want to sleep early or rest after a tiring day
- You have a villa with a private pool and want the space to be yours
Three or more ticks suggest opting out, or asking for it by request only.
How do we opt in or out politely?
Be direct and brief. Staff would rather have a clear answer than guess.
| Choice | What to say |
|---|---|
| Opt out | “Please skip turn-down during our stay. We will ask if we need anything.” |
| Opt in at a set time | “We would like turn-down during dinner, between a chosen window.” |
| Daytime only | “Please service the room once a day, in the afternoon.” |
Say it at check-in and once more by phone on the first evening.
Does the hotel need to know in advance?
It helps. Resorts that arrange romantic set-ups, such as flowers or towel art, may schedule them alongside turn-down. Our guide on when honeymoon decor is set up shows how to time it.
If you want a surprise, tell the resort your dinner time. If you want none, say so in the booking notes before you arrive.
What about villas and butlers?
In a private villa, turn-down may be done by a butler who also holds a key. Ask how they enter and whether they announce themselves. Our guide on staff access and butler privacy in villas covers the questions.
Pair this with the habits in our do-not-disturb and door lock guide.
What should we do next?
- Tick the two lists above together, and compare.
- Choose: opt out, opt in at a set time, or daytime service only.
- Write one sentence and give it to the front desk at check-in.
- Send us your choice if you would like it added to our message to the resort before you arrive.
