Malaysian passport holders can visit Vietnam without a visa for up to 30 days, if the passport has at least six months of validity left. 1 Check both passports before you book, and verify the rule on an official source close to your trip. This page was checked on 20 October 2026.
This guide sits in our destination fit topic. For other checks, read our passport and name checks before your first honeymoon.
What does the checklist say?
Vietnam Tourism states that Malaysian citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 30 days under a bilateral agreement, and the passport should be valid for at least six months after arrival. 1 Use this list.
- Passport validity. Both passports valid for at least six months after your arrival date.
- Passport pages. Keep space for entry and exit stamps.
- Stay length. Plan to leave within the visa-free period.
- Names. Booking names match the passport exactly.
- Onward travel. Keep your return flight details ready.
- Official check. Confirm the rule on a government source within a few weeks of travel.
What if we plan to stay longer?
A longer stay needs a different route. The same source says an e-visa can allow up to 90 days, applied for online on the official portals. 1 Use those portals only, because other websites may charge extra.
In what order should we check?
Check validity first, then the dates, then the names. A passport problem takes the longest to fix, so find it before you pay for flights. Our guide on passport names that must match your booking explains the common mismatches.
What about transits and connections?
If you fly via another country, the transit country may have its own rules. Check them for both passports. Read getting to Phu Quoc from Malaysia for route ideas and the checks that go with them.
What about travel on an island leg or a ferry?
Rules for each border crossing apply on the day. Keep passports in your hand luggage, not your check-in bag, and keep copies in a separate place.
Will anything change before we fly?
It can. Entry rules are updated from time to time, so check again a few weeks before departure and again in the week of travel. We note the date on this page, so you can see how old the information is.
What should we do next?
- Check both passport expiry dates today.
- Note your arrival and departure dates and compare with the visa-free period.
- Confirm the rule on an official source before you pay.
- Message us. We will go through your dates and names, point to the sources to verify and build the trip around them.
