Passport and Name Checks Before Your First Honeymoon

You are newly married, your documents may not match yet, and the flight is close.

HoneymoonQuest Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

Book using your names exactly as printed on your passports, and check that each passport is valid for your destination’s rules. Do this before you pay. A mismatch is simple to fix before booking and costly after.

This belongs to our occasions topic, because newly married couples are most likely to have changing documents.

Which name goes on the ticket?

The one on the passport you will carry. Not the name on your marriage certificate or your IC, unless they match the passport.

If one partner has changed or will change their name, the passport and the ticket must still match each other on the day. See our guides on passport names matching booking names and booking after a post-wedding name change.

What should we check on the passport?

Use this two-column check on both passports.

On the passportOn the booking
Full name and spellingExactly the same, including middle names
Expiry dateBeyond your return date, plus any extra the country requires
Blank pagesEnough for stamps, if required
Passport numberMatches what the airline or hotel holds
Date of birthSame day, month and year

What if the passport is close to expiry?

Check the destination’s official entry rule first. Some countries ask for validity beyond your return date. If you are close, apply for renewal early, and ask the immigration office about the current processing time.

Our page on what to do when time is short for a visa lists options if your documents cannot be ready.

What if the names do not match?

Act early and calmly. Contact the airline or provider and ask what corrections are allowed, what they cost and what proof they need. Our guide on name change fees between airlines and hotels shows what to expect.

Keep every reply in writing so you can show it at check-in if needed.

What about visas and entry rules?

Entry rules for Malaysian passport holders differ by country and can change. Always check the destination’s official site or embassy before you travel. We can point you to what to check, but the final answer comes from the authority.

What should we do next?

  1. Lay both passports side by side and read every name aloud.
  2. Check expiry dates against the destination’s rule.
  3. Compare the names with any booking you already hold.
  4. Send us the details, and we will help you confirm the spelling in every booking.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

Send us the names exactly as they appear on both passports, plus your dates. We will check them against the bookings and flag anything that could cause trouble at check-in.

Questions couples ask

Does my passport name change automatically after marriage?

No. A passport shows the name it was issued with until you apply to change it. Tickets must match the passport you will carry, so book using the name exactly as printed there, even if your other documents have changed.

How much validity should my passport have?

Entry rules differ by country, and some require validity beyond your return date. Check the official immigration site of your destination before you book, and renew early if you are close.

What if we booked before checking and the names are wrong?

Contact the airline or provider straight away. Minor spelling fixes may be possible, but a different name can mean a fee or a new ticket. Ask what is allowed, and keep every reply in writing.
