A good villa boundary has three layers: a gate that locks, a fence or wall at the right height, and planting that stays thick all year. Ask the reservation team about each one by name, because photos rarely show them honestly.
This quick check belongs to our privacy and rooms topic. Use it alongside the wider questions to ask a resort about villa privacy.
What does each boundary actually do?
The gate controls who walks in. The fence or wall controls who sees in. The hedge softens the edge and adds a little sound dampening, but it is the weakest of the three.
Resorts like to show all three in one flattering photo taken from inside. Ask what the view looks like from the path or the neighbouring villa instead.
Which gate questions matter?
Start with the gate, because it is the one you can test on arrival.
- Does it lock from the inside, and do you hold a key or code?
- Is it solid or slatted, so passers-by can see through?
- Does the buggy path stop at the gate or run beside it?
A slatted gate on a busy path gives much less privacy than a solid one in a quiet corner.
How tall and how solid is the fence?
Height matters less than you think. What matters is whether the fence is above eye level for someone standing on the path, and whether it has gaps.
Ask whether the fence is wood, stone, bamboo screen or glass. Bamboo and woven screens look romantic but can leave gaps. Ask for a photo taken from outside the villa if the resort will share one.
Can we trust a hedge?
A hedge is living, so it changes. It may be fuller in the rainy months and thinner after trimming or a dry spell.
| Hedge detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Plant type | Some stay dense, others drop leaves |
| Height now | Photos may be from a newer, lower planting |
| Trimming schedule | Fresh trimming can open sightlines for days |
| Who trims it | A trimming crew near your pool may be noisy |
Ask the resort to confirm the current height, not the planned height.
What about sightlines from other villas and paths?
A tall fence does not help if the neighbouring villa has a raised deck. Ask whether any upper floor or terrace looks into your pool. Our neighbour sightline test explains how to check this from the resort layout and photos.
Also ask where staff walk. If the service path runs along your fence, you may hear carts and voices even when you cannot be seen.
Do these checks change for Muslim couples or modesty needs?
They may. If you want to use the pool in swimwear with full comfort, the fence height and the staff access rules matter more. Ask when staff may enter the garden and whether they call ahead.
Our guide on whether a private pool is really private goes further on this, and the pool villa privacy checklist lists the rest of the items.
What should we do next?
- Copy the gate, fence and hedge questions into one email.
- Ask for the villa number or category you are being offered.
- Ask for a reply in writing, with the current heights if they have them.
- Send us the reply and we will tell you what stands out, or ask a follow-up for you.
