Give the splurge night to the base where you will spend the most time awake in the room, and where the setting is the point. That is usually the quieter, more scenic stop. The grid below turns that rule into a decision you can both agree on.
This guide belongs to our itinerary styles topic. For a wider look at one big treat on a small budget, see one big splurge night on a tight budget.
What makes a splurge land well?
A splurge works when you can enjoy it. That needs energy, time and privacy. A great room you arrive at past midnight, then leave at dawn, wastes the money.
Ask yourselves a plain question: where will we be awake, relaxed and together for the longest stretch?
How do we score the two bases?
Rate each base from one to five on each row, then add up.
| Row | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Time awake in the room | How many waking hours will we spend there? |
| Privacy | Can we truly be on our own? |
| Setting | Is the view or the space the reason we came? |
| Energy | Will we be rested enough to enjoy it? |
| Weather safety | If it rains, is the night still good? |
The base with the higher total gets the splurge. If the scores are within one point, choose by the weather row.
Which night within the base?
The first night is a poor pick for some couples. You land tired, check in late and sleep. The last night can be a poor pick too, because you pack and set alarms.
A middle night tends to work best. You are settled, rested and not yet thinking about the flight. If your stay is only two nights, choose the night with the later check-out the next morning.
Should it be the room or the experience?
Choose the room when you will be in it for the evening and the morning. A pool villa, a balcony or a bathtub only pays off if you use them. Our pool villa upgrade guide shows how to test that.
Choose the experience when you mainly sleep in the room. A private dinner or a sunset cruise can matter more than a bigger bed. Whichever you choose, ask for the full inclusions in writing.
What if one of us wants the splurge in a different place?
Score separately, then compare. Look only at the row where you differ the most. One of you may care about privacy and the other about the view.
A villa with a private pool may satisfy both. If it cannot, compare the two options for two and decide together.
What should we do next?
- Score both bases using the grid, each on your own.
- Compare the totals and the weather row.
- Choose the night and decide room or experience.
- Message us. We will compare the options as a total for two and check what is confirmed in writing.
