Take the package price, subtract the room-only rate for the same dates, and look at what is left. If the remainder is lower than what the inclusions would cost you separately, the package is worth it. If not, book direct and ask for one or two small extras.
This guide sits in our occasions topic. For the wider question, see when a honeymoon package beats booking separately.
How does the subtraction method work?
Use one sheet and fill it in the same order each time. The point is to compare the same stay on both sides.
| Line | Package | Room only |
|---|---|---|
| Room type and nights | Same | Same |
| Meals included | Write down which | None |
| Transfers | Included or not | Extra |
| Taxes and service charge | Included or not | Included or not |
| Extras (dinner, spa, decor) | Listed | Not included |
| Cancellation terms | Write down | Write down |
Add up what you would actually pay for the meals, transfers and extras if you booked them yourself. The package must beat that sum to be worth it.
Which inclusions count and which do not?
Count only what you will use. A spa credit you never redeem is not value, and a breakfast you skip is not value either.
Ask for the exact wording of each inclusion. “Dinner for two” can mean a set menu at a fixed time. Our package comparer tool helps you list them side by side, and what a package really includes explains the common ones.
Which terms change the answer?
Read these before you compare prices, because a better price with weak terms may cost more later.
- Minimum nights
- Blackout dates, including holiday weeks
- Whether the offer needs proof of your anniversary
- Cancellation and change rules
- Whether the voucher expires or is tied to specific days
A package with a minimum-night rule can push you to stay longer than you planned. That is a cost even if the nightly rate looks good.
When does booking direct win?
Direct tends to win when the package bundles items you would skip, when you want a flexible rate, or when your dates are only a maybe. It also wins if you prefer to choose your own dinner or spa.
You can still ask the resort for a small gesture on a direct booking. Our guide on claiming honeymoon perks on an anniversary explains how to word the request.
When does the package win?
A package wins when the inclusions are things you were going to buy anyway, such as a dinner and a transfer, and the terms are fair. It also saves effort, because the resort handles the extras.
If the price looks surprisingly low, read honeymoon package too cheap: warning signs before you pay.
How do we keep the comparison fair?
Ask for both quotes in writing on the same dates, the same room and the same number of guests. Check that taxes and service charge are shown in both. Our guide on comparing quotes on the same basis shows how to set that up.
What should we do next?
- Get the package quote and the room-only quote for the same dates.
- Fill in the worksheet and cross out what you would not use.
- Read the terms and note the cancellation rule.
- Send both quotes to us. We will compare them as a total for two and explain the trade-offs.
