Neither route is always cheaper. The answer comes from pricing the same trip both ways, line by line, with the same dates, room and inclusions. Do that once and the winner is usually clear.
This guide belongs to our package evaluation topic. For ready-made options, see our honeymoon packages page.
How do we make the comparison fair?
Start by fixing what stays the same. Use identical dates, the same room type, the same departure airport and the same number of nights.
Then decide which extras you would buy anyway. If you would never join a snorkel trip, do not count it as value in the package.
What does the costing sheet look like?
Fill in this table twice, once for the package and once for DIY (do it yourself).
| Line | Package route | DIY route |
|---|---|---|
| Flights and baggage | Included or separate? | Fare plus bags and seats |
| Room | Package room rate | Best flexible or fixed rate |
| Transfers | Included, limits? | Booked or taxi |
| Meals | Which meals covered? | Your real eating plan |
| Activities | Only those you use | Booked separately |
| Taxes and service charge | Included or added? | Added on top |
| Insurance and card fees | Usually separate | Separate |
Which costs show up in only one route?
Some costs only appear in one route, and these swing the answer.
- DIY only: booking fees, currency or card charges, your time.
- Package only: items you will not use, a higher cancellation penalty.
- Both: tips, taxes, airport extras, travel insurance.
For the budget side of this, see honeymoon budget categories to track.
How do we handle meals and activities?
Meals are the biggest swing. If the package includes half board but you would eat out at cheaper places, the meals are not a saving. If you would eat at the resort anyway, they are.
Do the same with activities. Count only what you would genuinely do. Our guide on package price versus paying extras separately shows how.
What about the value of our time?
Booking separately takes hours: searching, comparing, rebooking, replying to emails. If your leave is short or your energy is low after the wedding, that time has a cost.
A travel agent has a fee in some cases and a margin in others. Our guide on whether a travel agent costs more or less explains how to ask.
How do we compare the two totals?
Put the two totals next to each other, then add a short note on flexibility. A slightly higher total with free changes can be the better choice. A low total that is non-refundable carries risk.
Our honeymoon budget calculator can hold both sets of numbers for you.
What should we do next?
- Fix dates, room, airport and nights.
- Fill the sheet for the package route.
- Fill the sheet for the DIY route.
- Add notes on cancellation and changes.
- Send both sheets to us if you want help reading the gap.
