A beach resort suits couples who want everything on one site and little decision-making. A boutique city hotel suits couples who want character, walkable streets and a more personal welcome. The scorecard below helps you decide which side of that line you sit on.
This guide is part of our destination decisions topic, where we compare stay types the same way each time.
How do the two stays compare?
Fill in the scorecard separately. For each row, write R if you lean resort or B if you lean boutique.
| Row | Resort leans | Boutique leans |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | Villa or pool for seclusion | Quiet room inside a small building |
| Service | A large team, structured | Personal, flexible |
| Food | A choice of outlets on site | Fewer on site, more outside |
| Activities | Pool, spa, water sports | Walking, culture, markets |
| Extras | Packages, decorations, dinners | Small touches, a late checkout |
| Transfer | A long ride or a boat | Short taxi from the airport |
Count your letters. A clear majority gives you the starting type.
Which gives more privacy?
Privacy depends on the exact room, not the label. A secluded villa gives you the most. A boutique room on a high floor can feel just as private as a resort room next to a shared path.
Ask about neighbours, sightlines and shared paths. Our questions to ask a resort about villa privacy list works for both types.
Which gives better service?
Both can be excellent. A boutique hotel usually has fewer guests per staff member, so requests can be fast and personal. A resort has more departments, which means more choice but sometimes slower coordination.
Judge by how they reply before you book. A clear, warm, specific message is a good sign.
What about food, halal and prayer?
A resort holds most meals on site. Ask which outlets are halal-certified and whether room service is included. A city hotel lets you eat outside, so you can choose certified restaurants nearby, but you must check each.
For either, ask where the nearest prayer space is and whether the room shows the qibla.
Which suits a tired couple?
A resort asks less of you: breakfast, pool, dinner, sleep. A city hotel invites you to go out, which some couples enjoy and others find tiring. Our guide on resort or town stay covers this trade-off in more depth.
What do honeymoon packages include?
Resort packages bundle decorations, dinner and a spa credit. A boutique hotel may offer fewer items but more flexibility. Read what a honeymoon package really includes before you compare prices.
How do we get a quiet room in either?
Ask for a high floor, away from lifts, bars and event spaces. Use the wording in request a quiet room and get it. Confirm the room type in writing.
What are the four questions to ask?
- Which way does this exact room face, and what is next to it?
- What happens nearby in the evening, such as events, bars or boat traffic?
- What is included at breakfast and dinner, and what is halal-certified?
- Can you confirm the room type and extras in writing?
The answers show the difference between a good photo and a good stay.
What should we do next?
- Fill in the scorecard separately and compare.
- Choose your top two privacy needs and one food need.
- Ask each property the four questions above.
- Send us the shortlist. We will compare the options for the same nights, with extras and a total for two.
