East Coast Monsoon: Honeymoon Alternatives

Your dates fall when Redang and Perhentian are closed, and you still want an island feeling.

HoneymoonQuest Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

If your leave lands in the monsoon months, change the coast, not the dream. The west coast and parts of Thailand are usually calmer then, and they can give you the same island feeling. This guide helps you swap with your eyes open.

It sits in our season and timing topic, where weather is checked before a place is chosen.

Why do the east coast islands close?

The northeast monsoon brings strong winds and rough seas to the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Boats stop, jetties close and resorts shut for the season.

Our guide to the best months for Redang and Perhentian explains the usual window and what a reopening date really means. Always ask the resort for the current date.

What did you want from the east coast?

Think about what drew you to Redang, Perhentian or Tioman. The answer decides the best swap.

Which west coast swaps work best?

Langkawi suits couples who want resorts, calm water and easy transfers. Check our guide on Langkawi weather by month to read rain and sea conditions for your dates.

Penang and Pangkor suit couples who care about food and slow evenings more than swimming. Each has quieter corners if you ask about the room position.

Which overseas swaps are worth comparing?

The Andaman Sea coast of Thailand tends to be drier in the same period, so Phuket, Krabi and Koh Lipe can work. Our page on overseas alternatives in monsoon months lists more.

Bali is in its wetter season then, which suits some villa lovers but not those after beach days. Our note on whether Bali in the wet season is worth it weighs the trade-off.

What do we ask when an island is partly open?

Ask these four questions in writing:

  • Which boats run, and on which days?
  • What happens if the boat is cancelled?
  • Are the restaurant and dive shop open?
  • Can you move or refund the booking if the sea is rough?

A resort that answers clearly is a safer choice than one that only says “open”.

How does the journey change the choice?

Overseas swaps need passports, entry checks and a longer day of travel. West coast swaps need a short flight and a simple transfer.

If your leave is short, pick the west coast first. Add an overseas option only if you have time for the journey and energy to enjoy it.

What should we do next?

  1. Write down what you wanted from the east coast.
  2. Match it to a swap in the table above.
  3. Check weather and entry rules for your dates with an official source.
  4. Send us your dates, and we will compare two swaps as a total for two.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

Tell us what you wanted from the east coast and your travel dates. We will compare two or three swaps as a total for two, with transfer times and the weather risk of each.

Questions couples ask

When do the east coast islands close?

Boat services and resorts on islands such as Redang and Perhentian pause during the northeast monsoon, which runs through the cooler, wetter months at the end and start of the year. Exact dates differ by resort, so ask each one for its current reopening date in writing.

Can we still go if one resort says it is open?

Sometimes, but open does not mean calm. Rough seas can cancel boats on the day, and facilities such as dive shops and restaurants may be shut. Ask what runs, how transfers are handled in bad weather, and what happens to your booking if the sea is too rough.

Is the west coast really drier at that time?

The west coast and the islands off it usually see calmer, drier weather while the east coast is wet. That is why Langkawi, Penang and Pangkor are the first swaps to compare. Showers still happen anywhere, so keep a rain-day plan for at least one afternoon.
