If the east-coast islands are shut in your month, look at places on a different coast, where the sea is calmer at that time of year. The Andaman coast of Thailand and the Maldives are common choices. A city trip is also a safe plan B.
This guide sits in our destination decisions topic. It helps you pick a coast first, then a place, and then check what you can confirm.
Why do the east-coast islands close?
During the northeast monsoon, the sea on Malaysia’s east coast becomes rough, and boat crossings are not safe or reliable. Resorts on Redang, Perhentian and Tioman commonly close or reduce services for the season. Our pages for Redang and Perhentian cover the details by island.
Opening dates change from year to year, so always ask the resort directly. If you booked already, check your cancellation and change terms.
Which coasts are calmer in that season?
A rule of thumb is to move to the other side of the weather. The Andaman coast of Thailand, around Phuket and Krabi, is in its drier season while the east coast of Malaysia is wet. The Gulf of Thailand side, around Koh Samui, has its own wet months at a similar time, so do not assume it works.
Bali is in its wet season, but resorts operate and some couples enjoy it with indoor plans. Our Bali rainy season guide covers what to expect.
How do the options compare?
| Option | What helps | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Phuket or Krabi | Drier season on the Andaman side | Crowds and prices in peak weeks |
| Koh Samui | Gulf-side resorts, direct flights from some cities | Wet weather in the same months |
| Bali | Resorts and spas run all year | Daily showers, traffic, wet-season rain |
| Maldives | Drier months start around the turn of the year | Cost, transfer type, halal food |
| City break | Rain-proof plans, wide food choice | Fewer beach days |
Which one suits us?
If you want sand and sea, start with the Andaman coast. Compare Phuket versus Koh Samui by rain season before you decide. If rest matters more than swimming, a spa-focused place in Bali or a city with a good hotel can work.
For a splurge on a short list of islands, see Maldives compared. If staying in Malaysia matters, read Langkawi in the northeast monsoon.
How do we check any alternative?
Run the same four checks on every option:
- What is the usual weather for your exact travel dates?
- Is the beach, boat or activity you want actually running that week?
- Are there indoor things to do on a wet day?
- What do the flights and transfers cost in total for two?
If an answer is uncertain, ask the resort to confirm it in writing.
What should we do next?
- Note your leave dates and how flexible they are.
- Decide whether sand and swimming are a must, or rest is enough.
- Shortlist two coasts and run the four checks on each.
- Send us the shortlist. We will compare them for your month and give you a total for two.
