Ask the hotel, before you arrive, for the qibla direction in your room, a prayer mat and a clean place to make ablution. Also ask where the nearest surau or mosque is. Written replies save you from searching on the first night.
This guide is part of our booking requests topic, and it sits alongside the broader page on Muslim-friendly honeymoons.
What can we realistically ask a hotel for?
Hotels in places used to Muslim guests are used to these requests. In quieter or more remote places, the staff may need a little more notice.
These five requests are reasonable to make:
- The qibla direction for your room, or a marked sticker
- A prayer mat and, if you wish, prayer clothing
- A space to make ablution comfortably
- A wall clock or a printed prayer time sheet
- The nearest surau, mosque or prayer room
Which timeline works best?
A timeline keeps the request small and gives staff time to prepare. Follow this one.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| About a week before | Email the hotel with the five requests above |
| Two days before | Reconfirm, and ask for a reply naming what is available |
| On arrival | Ask the staff to show you the qibla and the mats |
| First evening | Check the direction with a compass app |
| Before leaving | Tell the hotel what worked, so others benefit |
How do we word the message?
Short and specific is best. Here is a version you can adjust:
“Hello, we are arriving on the 20th for our honeymoon. Could you tell us the qibla direction in our room, and whether you can place two prayer mats there? We would also like to know the nearest surau or mosque. Thank you.”
Our guide on how to word a honeymoon special request shows how to keep these notes clear.
What if the resort has no surau?
Island resorts may not have a dedicated prayer room. Ask what they offer instead: a quiet corner in the lobby, a spare meeting room, or a prayer mat kept at the reception.
If you plan day trips, think about prayer times during the day as well. Our guide on prayer and halal stops on long transfers helps you plan for road and boat journeys.
How do we know the request is confirmed?
A friendly reply saying “noted” is a good sign but is not a promise. Ask the hotel to list what they can provide, in writing, on your booking.
Read our short guide on the difference between a request and a confirmed arrangement. It shows the wording that turns “we will try” into “this is arranged”.
What should we bring ourselves?
Pack a compact prayer mat, a small compass or a qibla app you have set up at home, and your prayer clothing. They cost little and remove the worry.
Download offline maps of the area. You may not have a signal at the resort when you want to look for a nearby mosque.
What should we do next?
- Decide which of the five requests matter most to you both.
- Send the message to the hotel about a week before travel.
- Save their reply on your phone, ready to show at check-in.
- Pack your own mat and a compass app as a backup.
- Send us your resort and dates, and we will ask the hotel for you.
