For short leave, rank destinations by door-to-door time, not flight time. Penang, Langkawi and Singapore keep the lost hours low, while island resorts that need a boat cost more. A simple four-part formula helps you compare.
This guide sits in our destination decisions topic and works with the usable holiday days calculator.
What is the door-to-door formula?
Add four parts for each destination:
- Home to airport. Include the road time and parking or e-hailing.
- Airport time. Check-in, baggage, security and boarding.
- Flight. The gate-to-gate time on the timetable.
- Landing to room. Immigration if abroad, baggage, transfer, and check-in.
The total is the time you will not spend on the honeymoon. Multiply it by two for the round trip, and you see how much of your leave disappears.
How do the options rank by hours lost?
This ranking is relative, from least to most time lost, and assumes a flight from KLIA or KLIA2. Check the real timetable before you book.
| Rank | Destination | Why the time stays low or grows |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Penang | About one hour in the air, short transfer to town |
| 2 | Langkawi | About one hour in the air, short transfer to resort areas |
| 3 | Singapore | About one hour in the air, then immigration and a city transfer |
| 4 | Phuket or Krabi | Close to two hours in the air, longer transfers on arrival |
| 5 | Bintan | Short travel, but a ferry leg adds waiting time |
| 6 | East coast islands | A flight or drive, then a boat, with weather-dependent timing |
Our page on picking a honeymoon by flight time expands the idea beyond two hours.
What changes with a late flight?
A flight that lands late at night can erase your first evening, and some boats stop running in the afternoon. Ask if your last transfer will run after your landing time, and if it will not, plan a night near the airport.
For the best use of a Friday to Sunday break, see flight times for a weekend honeymoon.
How do we test a trip against our leave?
Count your real nights at the destination, then subtract the hours lost on both days. A rule of thumb: if arrival and departure each cost half a day, a three-night break gives you two good days.
Use our guide to usable holiday hours to run the sum. If the result feels thin, add a night or choose a closer option.
Which option suits a tired couple?
If you are worn out after the wedding, choose the option with fewer legs: one flight, one transfer. A single change of transport matters more than a half-hour difference in flying time.
Ask yourselves whether you would rather lose an hour on a boat or an hour in a taxi. Couples tend to find a taxi easier because it avoids waiting for a sailing slot.
What should we do next?
- Write your leave dates and departure airport.
- List two or three destinations and fill the four-part formula for each.
- Rank them by hours lost and check the timetable.
- Send us the shortlist. We will confirm transfer details with partners, flag any boat or late-arrival risks, and give a total for two.
