Search the official MOTAC list of licensed travel agencies, then match the company name and licence number to what the agent gave you. If they do not match, pause before you pay. The whole check takes a few minutes and is worth doing before every deposit.
This guide sits in our trust and enquiries topic, where we explain how to check a travel business before you commit.
Why does a licence matter?
In Malaysia, a business that sells tour and travel services must be licensed by the tourism ministry under the Tourism Industry Act. A licence means the business is on an official register and can be checked.
It does not tell you the trip will be perfect. It tells you the company exists and is accountable to a regulator.
How do we search the MOTAC list?
Follow these steps, in this order.
- Open the official MOTAC website by typing its address yourself.
- Find the section for checking licensed tour and travel operators.
- Search the company name that the agent gave you.
- Compare the licence number and the registered company name.
- Note the licence type and its status.
If the site layout changes, look for the licence check or list of licensed operators in its menu.
What should we match?
Three things must line up. Write them side by side.
| Item | Where you find it |
|---|---|
| Company name | Quote, invoice and MOTAC list |
| Licence number | The agent’s website or document, and MOTAC list |
| Payment account name | The bank details on the invoice |
If the account name is a different person or company, ask why before you pay. Our guide on safe ways to pay a travel agent covers this.
What if the name is not on the list?
Do not argue with the agent. Ask in writing for the exact registered company name and licence number.
Check once more in case of a spelling variation or a brand name that differs from the company name. If you still cannot match it, pause. You have the right to wait for a clear answer.
What else should we check besides the licence?
A licence is the start. Look at the full picture:
- Whether prices, inclusions and terms are in writing.
- Whether the quote shows a total for two, with taxes.
- Whether the agent answers specific questions clearly.
- Whether the deposit amount and due dates are stated.
Our guide on honeymoon travel agent red flags lists the warning signs, and the guide on MOTAC licence versus MATTA membership explains what each credential means.
What should we do next?
- Ask any agent you plan to pay for their company name and licence number.
- Search the official MOTAC list yourself.
- Match the licence, the company name and the payment account.
- Keep every quote and message. If something goes wrong later, our guide on where to complain about a travel agent shows the route.
