What to Book First for Your Honeymoon

Prices move while you decide, and you are afraid of booking the wrong thing first.

HoneymoonQuest Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

Book in this order: confirm leave, check passports, hold a flexible stay, lock the flights, then add the extras. Do not pay for anything non-refundable until your leave is approved. The steps below explain each stage.

The order is part of our occasions topic, where we plan trips around real-life constraints.

What is the five-step order?

  1. Confirm leave in writing with your employers.
  2. Check both passports for validity and name spelling.
  3. Hold a stay with a refundable or changeable rate.
  4. Lock the flights once the dates are firm.
  5. Add transfers, activities and special requests last.

Which bookings do we hold, lock or wait on?

Use labels so you know where you stand.

ActivitiesWait or holdChoose after you arrive and see energy levels
Special requestsWait, then confirm in writingNeed the final dates

How do passports and names fit in?

Early. A short validity or a mismatched name can stop the trip at check-in, and fixes take time. Read passport and name checks before you pay.

If your name changed or will change after the wedding, check the booking name carefully.

How do we compare cancellation terms?

Look at three things: the last free-cancellation date, the fee after it, and whether dates can change. Read our guide on reading a cancellation policy and the glossary entries on free cancellation and non-refundable rates.

If two options are close in price, choose the one with the more flexible terms.

When should we book if we are unsure about timing?

Book the stay with a flexible rate and watch flight prices. If you worry about missing a good fare, ask how long the fare can be held. Our guide on how early to book a honeymoon package explains the trade-off.

What should we do next?

  1. Confirm your leave with a written reply.
  2. Check passports and note any name differences.
  3. Decide which items to hold and which to lock.
  4. Send us your dates and terms, and we will check them against current options and confirm each booking in writing.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

Send us your leave status and your target dates. We will give you a booking order for your trip, mark what to hold or lock, and confirm each booking in writing.

Questions couples ask

Should we book flights or the hotel first?

Secure the item with the least flexibility and the most price risk first, which is usually the flight or a limited-room resort. But only after your leave is approved. If both are flexible, start with whichever fixes your dates.

Is it safe to book before the leave is approved?

It is risky. If you must, choose refundable or changeable rates, and read the terms. Non-refundable fares may look cheaper, but a refused leave turns them into a loss.

When do we pay in full?

Pay deposits to hold, and the balance only when the terms require it. Ask for the payment schedule in writing, and keep every confirmation. If a provider asks for full payment far in advance, ask why.
