Book as soon as your leave dates are confirmed, and sooner if you travel in school holidays, public holidays or at a small island resort. If your dates are flexible, you have more room. The earlier you choose, the more options you keep, and the more important it is to read the change terms.
This guide belongs to our package evaluation topic. It works backwards from your dates.
What decides how early we need to book?
Four things decide it. The season, the size of the place, how fixed your dates are, and how much must line up, such as rooms and transfers.
A small resort with few rooms fills sooner than a large city hotel. A trip with ferries or boat transfers needs more timing to match. Our guide on booking early versus late explains how timing relates to price.
How does the season change the answer?
| Time of year | Planning advice |
|---|---|
| School holidays and public holidays | Book as early as your leave allows |
| Long weekends | Move quickly, rooms go first |
| Mid-year and year-end peaks | Early booking keeps more choices |
| Off-peak or midweek | More room to wait, but still ask |
| Rainy-season dates | More rooms free, so check weather risk |

What about a late deal?
A late deal can be a nice surprise. It can also leave you with a room you did not want, or nothing at all. For a couple with short leave and a wedding behind them, certainty is worth more than a small saving.
If you do look for a late deal, set a deadline. Decide the date you will book whatever the price.
What order should we plan in?
Work backwards from your leave dates.
- Confirm leave days. Our usable holiday days calculator shows the real days after travel.
- Choose the type of place: beach, city or mixed.
- Ask for a package or room quote for those dates.
- Check change and cancellation terms.
- Confirm flights, then pay the deposit once terms are clear.
For the order of bookings, see honeymoon booking order for first-timers.
What if our dates might move?
Then book early only with flexible terms. Our guide on package cancellation versus flexible rates shows what to read before paying.
An early booking that cannot change is a risk. An early booking with a clear change policy is a comfort.
What should we do next?
