Room Only Plus Your Own Extras

You like the room but not the package around it, and want to build the rest yourselves.

HoneymoonQuest Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

You can book a room only and add your own extras, if you plan the stack in order and price every line. The method below works for a resort or a city hotel. It keeps you in control of what you pay for.

This guide belongs to our package evaluation topic, and works best alongside a clear idea of your priorities.

Step 1: what is the room rate really?

Ask what the room-only rate includes. Check breakfast, taxes, service charge and cancellation terms. A low rate with strict terms may not be the bargain it looks like.

If you are unsure what a package would add, read our honeymoon package extras checklist.

Step 2: which extras do we actually want?

List only what you would use. For most couples this is a short list.

  • A private dinner or a nice restaurant booking.
  • An airport or jetty transfer.
  • A couples spa session.
  • One activity or tour.
  • A surprise for the room.

Anything that is not on your list is not a saving. Leave it out.

Step 3: how do we price each extra?

Ask the hotel first, then compare one outside option for each line. Use this sheet.

For dinner, see private dinner add-ons worth paying for. For transfers, our transfer quote comparison sheet helps.

Step 4: what could go wrong with outside extras?

Outside vendors can be cheaper and more personal. They can also be late, hard to reach, or not allowed on the property. Check hotel rules first, and confirm timings with each vendor in writing.

Step 5: how do we add the total?

Add each line, then add tax and service charge where they apply. Compare the stack with a package for the same nights. Our quote brief builder helps you write the request.

Step 6: how do we keep it calm?

Keep one note with every confirmation and time. Group the items by day. After the wedding, you will not want to remember six messages.

Where transfers are involved, read hotel transfer: included or book your own.

What should we do next?

  1. Choose the room and confirm the rate terms.
  2. List the extras you really want.
  3. Price each with the hotel, then one outside option.
  4. Write the total for two and the times in one note.
  5. Send the note to us if you want it reviewed.

Questions couples ask

Is room only always cheaper than a package?

Not always. A package may include meals or transfers at a price that is hard to match separately. Room only gives control, and can save money when you skip things you would not use. Cost the full stack for two before you decide.

Do hotels allow outside extras?

Most do for transfers and tours, but rules differ for food, decorations and photographers. Ask the hotel what is allowed, and whether there is any fee. For dinners and spa, the hotel's own outlets are the simplest to arrange.

Will the hotel still treat us as honeymooners?

You can tell them, and ask what small courtesies are offered. Some hotels add a welcome note or fruit for honeymooners even on room-only rates. Ask politely, in writing, and do not assume it. Treat it as a bonus, not a given.
